Job summary

The Home for Little Wanderers in New York is seeking a part-time Group Leader to supervise a designated group of participants in the DYCD COMPASS afterschool program. You will foster a safe, inclusive environment and mentor youth to promote positive development and engagement.

The role supports enrichment activities across SEL, literacy, STEM, and arts, with a focus on relationship building and family engagement. Schedule is 15–19 hours weekly, with a 10-month program from September to June.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of two years of experience with school-age children; preferred.
• Associate degree or college coursework in Education, Child Development, Psychology, Social Work, Recreation, Human Services, or related field preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required DYCD, DOE, OCFS clearances and approvals.
• Must complete mandatory pre-service and annual trainings.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct supervision of an assigned group of participants.
• Create and maintain a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment for all participants.
• Build positive relationships with participants while serving as a mentor and role model.
• Promote positive youth development and foster participant confidence, leadership, responsibility, and teamwork.
• Utilize positive behavior management techniques and restorative practices to support student success.
• Support participants' social-emotional development through daily interactions and structured activities.
• Facilitate daily group meetings, transitions, attendance, snack distribution, and dismissal procedures.
• Support implementation of enrichment activities, academic support, recreation, SEL, literacy, STEM, arts, leadership, and healthy living programming.
• Assist Activity Specialists during specialty classes and reinforce participant engagement.
• Encourage active participation in all program activities.
• Address behavioral concerns using positive intervention strategies.
