Job summary

The Family YMCA of Emporia-Greensville is seeking a School Age Counselor for the before/after-school program (K‑8). This part‑time, non‑exempt role provides direct supervision of children, builds positive relationships with youth and families, and supports a safe, structured daily schedule.

Responsibilities include planning activities, maintaining staff‑to‑child ratios, assisting with snacks, and documenting issues.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Must be able to relate to participants and staff in a mature and sensitive manner.
• Must be able to collaborate with coworkers positively and supportively in a structured environment.
• Must be a positive role model to program participants and fellow staff.
• Must be able to interact and communicate clearly with others.
• Must have the ability to provide for the physical and emotional needs of children served.
• Must have the ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations and children’s needs.
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications within 30 days of hire date.

Responsibilities

• Actively supervise a group of children, according to plans, while maintaining appropriate staff-to-child ratios, as required by the Virginia Department of Education.
• Perform all duties in a manner that reflects the YMCA's character values.
• Cultivate positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children, and other staff.
• Fill out accident/incident reports as needed.
• Maintain consistent and accurate communication with staff and supervisor concerning program issues, supplies, schedule changes, illnesses, and other necessary information.
• Assist in planning and implementing the daily program, including treating each child with dignity and respect; recognizing individual needs and learning styles; helping children learn to think creatively and solve problems.
