Job description

AFTER SCHOOL CARE ASSISTANT

Position Type: Part‑Time

Salary: $15.00 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Assist with supervision and execution of instruction.
  • Continuously monitor student safety, well‑being, and self‑esteem, and support their independence.
  • Observe student behavior, maintain discipline, log time‑outs and in‑class suspensions, provide crisis prevention support, and restrain students safely when necessary.
  • Provide one‑on‑one academic support, clarify instructions, conduct brief study‑skill sessions, and reinforce learning.
  • Maintain standardized records and documentation of student progress.
  • Perform general housekeeping and maintain classroom order, including repair and maintenance of school equipment.
  • Complete clerical tasks: record attendance, file incident reports, and manage student progress records.
  • Feed students and assist with tasks they cannot perform independently.
  • Participate in staff development workshops and perform any related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards
  • Physical: Capable of using classroom equipment, lifting, carrying, and light moving tasks; consistent with light work standards.
  • Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge observable characteristics of data and people.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to convey information verbally or non‑verbally and receive instructions from superiors.
  • Language: Ability to read correspondence, prepare simple reports, and prepare instructional materials in standard English.
  • Intelligence: Ability to solve practical problems and interpret varied instructions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use basic arithmetic, formulas, decimals, and percentages.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to perform tasks requiring hand‑eye coordination with office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity: Capacity to handle office machines with minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate colors and shades.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to work under stress and handle stressed individuals.
  • Physical Communication: Ability to communicate verbally and listen; use telephone.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of after‑school care director responsibilities and classroom routines.
  • Knowledge of student handbook rules and emergency procedures.
  • Knowledge of organization and administration principles; basic curriculum understanding.
  • Continuous monitoring of student safety and well‑being, especially during inclusive activities.
  • Motivational skills to encourage students.
  • Maintenance of a clean, orderly environment and performance of clerical duties.
  • Management of basic files and records.
  • Comprehension and execution of oral and written instructions.
  • Establishment of effective working relationships necessary for assignments.
