Job summary

YMCA of Central New York is seeking an After School Arts Program Teaching Assistant in Syracuse, NY. The role supports arts instruction, maintains orderly classrooms, and upholds YMCA values while assisting the lead teacher and ensuring student safety.

Requires a high school diploma or GED; college degree preferred, plus experience with elementary students and strong communication and teamwork skills. Training on safety and youth protection is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; college degree preferred.
• Experience working with elementary-age students in an education setting.
• Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, decision-making, problem solving and leadership skills.
• Ability to work both in a team and independently.
• Must complete Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety and Youth Protection Series trainings prior to initial assignment.
• Must complete online Hazard Communication training within the first 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers in implementing arts lessons.
• Create a safe and trusting creative environment in the classroom.
• Ensure the safety of all students.
• Maintain the cleanliness and organization of classroom spaces.
• Communicate respectfully with students, administrators, and parents.
• Reinforce positive behaviors and creative strides.
• Handle disruptive behaviors per program procedures.
• Follow all guidelines in the staff handbook.
• Maintain required paperwork for the After School Arts Program Administrator.
• Attend mandatory YMCA/Syracuse City School District trainings.
