Join to apply for the Advisory Manager role at Honest Buck Accounting

We're looking for an experienced Advisory Manager to join our remote team at Honest Buck. You'll provide strategic CFO and Controller services to small businesses in the Early Childcare and Education industry, helping them navigate financial complexities and achieve their goals.

Who we are:

Honest Buck is an accounting firm dedicated to empowering early childhood education businesses through expert financial guidance. We prioritize mutual respect, collaboration, and work-life balance. We're growing and excited to welcome a new Advisory Manager to our team!

What you’ll do & why it matters:

As an Advisory Manager, you'll be the go-to financial expert for your clients, guiding them through business challenges and successes. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with business owners and leadership teams to design and execute financial goals
  • Offering strategic guidance to clients
  • Developing and maintaining financial models and cash forecasts
  • Overseeing budgetary processes and analyzing budget variances
  • Managing client team for month-end closing and reporting
  • Implementing accounting processes and internal controls
  • Tracking key metrics and trends
  • Creating and managing dashboards and KPI reports
  • Preparing books for audit and providing documentation requested by auditors
  • Being an empathetic support system for clients through all stages of their business

On a day-to-day basis, you'll be meeting with business owners to discuss their joys and struggles; sharing financial advice; emailing your clients and members of the accounting team to ensure financial records are properly managed; and brainstorming ways to help your clients succeed, creating the forecasts and analysis necessary to support those goals.

Who you are:

You will be great in this role if you have a mix of hands-on accounting experience and small business advising experience. Great Advisory Managers are empathetic, friendly, and eager to guide clients along their path to success.

Minimum requirements that I'll be looking for in your resume and cover letter:

  • Bachelor's in Accounting or equivalent formal education (unfortunately, experience alone cannot replace this requirement)
  • At least 7 years of accounting experience required (including hands-on accounting)
  • Strong working knowledge of income tax implications for small businesses and the individuals who own them - able to answer questions that a small business may ask, and/or comfortable researching advanced topics that aren't top of mind
  • Comfortable using QBOnline independently for a variety of functions and tasks
  • Experience working with or in very small organizations - the really small ones, without "back office" staff like accountants or HR
  • Ability to manage multiple clients & projects simultaneously

Strong preference will be given to candidates who also:

  • Are licensed as a CPA
  • Have a MBA or other Master's degree
  • Proven strategic leadership experience, preferably as a trusted advisor to business owners

Qualities that are key for success:

  • Demonstrated honesty and integrity
  • Committed to client satisfaction
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Excel
  • Enjoy working independently with a high degree of autonomy
  • Proficiency in creating financial forecasts and cash flow models
  • Quick learner, particularly when learning new software, tools, processes, etc.
  • Able to jump into hands-on accounting details as well as to provide our accounting team with hands-off accounting guidance

This role requires hands-on involvement and an entrepreneurial mindset to handle a wide spectrum of business matters. Knowing accounting and tax alone is not enough for this role; we come alongside our clients to help them with a wide variety of business questions. This position demands a commitment to client satisfaction, ensuring the accuracy and punctuality of deliverables. You may lead accounting staff on some projects while providing strategic advice on others.

What will secure an interview:

Let's get a little candid: with all the return-to-office mandates and economic changes, there's a lot of people seeking remote jobs this year. This means that we receive a lot more applications from qualified candidates than we are able to interview; last time we were hiring, we received about 700 applications in less than a month. This means that, sadly, we have to be very selective in which candidates we interview; we're too small of a team to have time to interview 500+ applicants. These are the additional criteria that are often key in our decision to interview or not:

  • Recent experience in a multi-client environment (usually obtained in public accounting, but other consulting roles might provide this, too!). If your recent experience has all been in private/industry, where you focus solely on a single company or a group under shared ownership, that is not likely to proceed.
  • Experience interacting with and advising business owners directly.
  • Experience working with businesses that are too small to have an internal accounting staff.
  • Strong income tax knowledge, particularly as relates to small business owners and individuals.
  • Strong knowledge of business, not just tax/accounting.
  • Experience in roles that encompass more than just tax/accounting work; operations, business management, etc., is favorable!
  • Last but not least - our minimum requirements are truly required; accounting experience less than 7 years, or not possessing a Bachelor's, will preclude us from further discussion.

Please be sure that your resume or cover letter clearly shows the ways in which you match these criteria - or include a note explaining! (An option will be available as part of the application process to tell us more.) If we can't see you meet these criteria, then we won't know we should proceed.

We often have more candidates that meet this criteria, too, than we're able to interview, but meeting these criteria will greatly increase your odds of an interview! We look forward to meeting you!

Why you should pick us:

We foster a dynamic and friendly environment that prioritizes both client service and employee collaboration. You’ll enjoy having meaningful work that makes a big impact on our clients and their communities. We are a fully remote, full-service accounting firm that promotes a positive work culture and encourages a healthy work-life balance. Find out more at: https://www.honestbuck.com/

Some perks you’ll appreciate:

  • Comprehensive Health Benefits including Health, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • 401(k) Plan with matching
  • Paid Time-off
  • Four day work week option after initial 6 month probationary period, which means a 32-35 hour work week majority of the year
  • Start Date: Flexible
  • Location: Remote; open to residents of most states in the US, including Alaska and Hawaii; not open to residents of California or New York
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday standard 8 hour days (dropping to Monday-Thursday, or Tuesday-Friday, after 6 months)
  • This is a full-time position and is not able to be worked concurrently with another full-time position. Any outside employment must be disclosed and approved.

Application review will be rolling as received. We endeavor to respond to all applications within a week of receipt. Thanks for your interest and application!
