Position Description
Description

The Advisor, NC Boost will play a transformational role by empowering students to design their academic and career goals and take ownership of their academic journey. The Advisor, NC Boost will provide holistic and intrusive student support through academic advising, navigating academic programs and process requirements, career exploration activities, financial readiness, and student development. The advisor will perform various tasks related to advising new, enrolled, and prospective students, including career planning, program and course selection, and retention services.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with the planning, implementation, and supportive resources that impact the engagement, retention, and degree completion of assigned students.
  • Assists students in course selection, monitor their academic progress, and offer mentorship on college policies, procedures, and personal development opportunities.
  • Provides academic advising assistance to a diverse student population and assists continuing students with understanding their degree plan/audit in preparation for advising.
  • Reviews student progress and tracks student use of academic support services.
  • Conducts regular outreach to faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success.
  • Maintains accurate tracking data and notes for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs.
  • Supports annual recruitment of new students into the program.
  • Assists students with clarifying values and goals; advises students regarding educational options, requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Offers academic support to guide students through the course selection process.
  • Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services.
  • Monitors and evaluates students’ educational progress by conducting academic progress audits.
  • Organizes periodic special events and programs for students, faculty and staff.
  • May conduct or support delivery of student seminars on issues of importance to students; Performs other related duties as assigned.

Marginal Functions:

  • Participate in professional associations and upgrade professional knowledge and skills as possible; membership in NACADA, CACRAO and N3CSDPA is encouraged/
  • Assist in the evaluation of advising processes on an annual basis.
  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the college.
  • Represent the Student Services department at campus committee meetings.
  • Assists in all areas of Student Services when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • College admissions and advising techniques and procedures.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.

  • Operational characteristics of equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned, including internet navigation.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment.

Ability to:

  • Understand the needs of community college students.
  • Enter, monitor and interpret student data accurately.
  • Interpret and apply college and assigned division goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Contribute to the development of academic mission, goals and objectives which complement those of the college.
  • Prepare clear and concise administrative and financial reports.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce departmental policies and procedures.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Provide advising services to students.
  • Follow all department safety rules and regulations.

Environmental Conditions:
The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office and classroom workspace. The employee must maintain the office and teaching environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.

Physical Conditions:
Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following; standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, reaching above shoulder, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens.

The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.

Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.

Scheduling Conditions:
This is a full-time, 12-month position working 36 hours per week, generally Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Friday, 8:00 AM to noon, with at least one evening per week until 7:00 PM. During peak periods, availability for both day and occasional evening work on any Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute site (or arranged off-campus site) is required.

Traveling Conditions:
Local travel between the Caldwell, Watauga, or off-campus sites may be needed. Out-of-state travel is limited but may be required for training and conferences.

Experience and Training

Experience:

One year of admissions or academic advisement experience is required

Additionally, two years of full-time responsible secretarial and clerical experience is required, with experience in one of the following areas, preferred:

  • North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS)
