Responsibilities

  • Advises students in assigned department/discipline and meets with them regularly to track progress.
  • Assists students with reviewing their Academic Advising Report and creating their My Educational Plan (MEP).
  • Advises students on course selection for degree programs and makes referrals to non-credit certificate programs; covers TSI regulations, prerequisites, and co-requisites.
  • Gathers and processes data regarding students to complete job functions.
  • Collaborates with staff to identify early interventions and develop academic support programming and events.
  • Refers students to counselors, college resources, and outside organizations when necessary.
  • Assists Directors/Managers in planning and developing successful academic programs and events.
  • Develops department objectives and strategies and maintains progress documentation.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of meetings and ensures compliance with policies.
  • Oversees processes and materials to ensure accuracy and compliance with rules.

Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Advisor I meets with students in assigned discipline on a regular basis to provide advising, track academic progress and success/completion/retention. Advise students on proper courseselection for credit programs and make appropriate referral tonon-credit certificate programs including TSI regulations, courseprerequisites, co-requisites and career advising. Collaborates with personnel in assigned department and related areas/otherdepartments in order to identify potential early interventions need; assist Department Directors in planning and develop successful academic support programming and events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Advises students in assigned department/discipline. Meets withstudents on a regular basis to track their academic progress andsuccess
  2. Assists students with reviewing their Academic Advising Reportand creating their MEP (My Educational Plan)
  3. Advises students on proper course selection for assigneddiscipline/department credit certificate and degree programs andmakes referrals to non-credit certificate programs. Advisingincludes TSI regulations, course prerequisites, co-requisites andcareer advising
  4. Acquires and processes data regarding students in assigneddiscipline in order to complete job function
  5. Collaborates with personnel in assigned department and relatedareas (college staff and faculty) in order to identify potentialearly interventions needed
  6. Refers students to counselors, college resources(organizations) and outside organizations when necessary
  7. Assists the Directors/Managers in planning and developingsuccessful academic support programming and events
  8. Develops department/position objectives and strategies
  9. Meets with students on a regular basis to track their progressand success. Maintains accurate documentation of meetings
  10. Monitors processes, materials and surroundings, ensuringaccuracy and compliance with all relevant rules, regulations andpolicies at all times
  11. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties asassigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Proficiency with common office software
  • High level of customer service
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail for tracking of studentsuccess and student educational plans
  • Ability to communicate and work well with all levels ofstudents

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably todo the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending;carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; ordriving an automobile. No special physical demands are required toperform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:
  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in aMicrosoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other generaloffice equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimalexposure to safety hazards
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of related experience, oran equivalent combination of education and experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience assisting students who have unique barriers withtheir educational success
Salary

Hiring salary range is $38,761- $44,575.

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all postedfull-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fallin that range is determined by your related experience andeducation.
