Job summary

The University of Nebraska at Omaha Maverick Advising Center seeks an Advisor I to guide UNO students toward meaningful educational experiences and help them set professional and personal goals. You will work primarily with UNO students and support peer advisors on projects.

Responsibilities include academic advising, transfer and credit evaluation, retention efforts, onboarding new students, and participating in NACADA activities. Some weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Responsibilities

  • Academic Advising: manage a caseload and advise from admission through graduation.
  • Transfer and Credit Evaluation: evaluate transfer credits and apply them to degree requirements.
  • Retention and Persistence: monitor reenrollment and progress to support student success.
  • Student Support, Coaching and Referral: provide coaching and refer students as needed.
  • New Student Onboarding: orient and teach institutional processes and technologies.
  • Recruiting Activities: guide prospective students through events and transcript evaluation.
  • Strategic Planning and Oversight: contribute to planning and continuous improvement.

Position Summary

The role of the Advisor I at the University of Nebraska at OmahaMaverick Advising Center is to provide students guidance to achievea meaningful educational experience and develop professional andpersonal goals. The Advisor I position works primarily advising UNOstudents and supports and assists the department and peer advisorson project responsibilities.

Job Duties
  • Academic Advising: Manages an assigned caseload or serves asprimary advisor for unit, including personalized guidance fromadmission through graduation. Assists with course recommendationsand developing academic plans of student that aligns with thestudents’ goals. Completes necessary forms and writerecommendation/support letters for students. Example: CareerAdvising
  • Transfer and Credit Evaluation: Evaluate official and unofficialacademic credit for transfer to UNO . Employ independent judgementto the applications of transfer credit in order to minimize time todegree completion and overall cost while maintaining the integrityof the degree requirements.
  • Retention and Persistence: Providing proactive, comprehensive, andexceptional service in monitoring reenrollment and student progressto enrollment. Foster student success, persistence and engagementwhile support students in their academic journey, incorporatingbest practices in academic advising.
  • Student Support, Coaching and Referral: Support and coach studentsin academic difficulty, probation, and other concerns. Refer whenappropriate.
  • New Student Onboarding: Orient and welcome newly admitted UNOstudents and introduce/teach key institutional processes andtechnologies.
  • Recruiting Activities: Offer prospective students personalizedguidance through events, meetings, and transcript evaluation.Promote the value of a 4-year degree and the UNO generaleducational curriculum.
  • Strategic Planning and Oversight: Engage inunit/college/campus==wide strategic planning and initiatives.Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation of advising.Seek ongoing professional development and maintain cohesive workconnections.
  • University and Professional Involvement: Participate in universitycommittees, programs, and events. Explore further developmentthrough active engagement in NACADA and student population oracademic program specific associations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
