Responsibilities

• Preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative patient care of complex adult surgical conditions, including complex aortic and aortic valve surgery.
• Treatment of emergent and non-emergent aortic and aortic valve pathology using medical management, and open and endovascular techniques.
• Serve as surgeon on complex aortic and aortic valve procedures under supervision.
• Teach other cardiothoracic surgery residents on the diagnosis and treatment of complex aortic and aortic valve disease.
• Engage in additional education and scholarly pursuits to support the mission of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.

Job description

Michigan Medicine is seeking motivated applicants for a one-year Non-ACGME training position in Advanced Aortic Surgery with a start date of July 1, 2027. This position is classified as a Clinical Lecturer (faculty) role in the Department of Cardiac Surgery. The aortic trainee will work under the direction of Bo Yang, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Cardiac Surgery and director of the aortic program. The expectations for the training experience include a full understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and planning of specialized aortic operations as well as the technical performance of these procedures. The role will provide the individual with training, education, and technical skills in the preoperative evaluation and planning, operative management (open and endovascular), postoperative care and follow-up of these patients. The trainee will participate in a collaborative environment that allows for a truly multidisciplinary approach to the care of each individual patient. This will occur in the setting of multidisciplinary conferences that will take place in a clinical and academic environment. The trainee is expected to attend mandatory teaching conferences including didactic teaching conferences, simulator labs, journal clubs, and morbidity and mortality conference.

Overall responsibilities of this position are as follows:

• Treatment of emergent and non-emergent aortic and aortic valve pathology utilizing medical management, and open and endovascular techniques.
• Serve as surgeon, commensurate with experience, on complex aortic and aortic valve procedures under the supervision of the aortic surgeons.
• Teach other cardiothoracic surgery residents on the diagnosis and treatment of complex aortic and aortic valve disease.
• Additional education and scholarly pursuits as determined by the aortic surgeons to support the mission of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.

• Board certified/board eligible by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) or acceptable equivalents listed below.

  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
  • Royal Colleges as specified below: Royal College of Physicians of London (RCP)
  • The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS)
• Applicants must be Board Certified or Board Eligible via the pathways stipulated by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
• Must hold or have the ability to obtain a full, unrestricted medical license in the State of Michigan.
• Candidates must be US Citizens or US Permanent Residents (Green Card) or eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
