Job summary

NSG Group/Pilkington in the United States seeks a Senior Materials Scientist to design and analyze thin-film coatings for optical and electrical properties, leading projects across teams. You will model coatings, develop experiments for CVD deposition, evaluate performance on lab and production samples, and collaborate with the UK/Japan Technology Centres to drive advancement in coatings technology.

  • PhD in applied physics or MS in materials science or equivalent.
  • Experience with thin films for semiconductor or photovoltaic applications.
  • Experience with measurement/analysis of thin films (XRD, XPS, SEM/TEM, spectrophotometry, TOF-SIMS, AFM).
  • Proficient in statistical tools and data analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in English (spoken and written).
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (15%).

Responsibilities

  • Design multi-layer coatings to achieve optical and electrical properties.
  • Optically model multi-layer coatings to predict properties.
  • Investigate processing-structure-property relationships related to coating electrical properties.
  • Develop and oversee experimental plans for depositions in the CVD lab.
  • Evaluate coating performance in lab, trial, and production samples (color, transmission, emissivity, resistance, adhesion, composition).
  • Interpret analysis results to guide technical or commercial teams.
  • Collaborate with UK and Japan Technology Centres.
  • Interact with external thin-film specialists and customers/universities.
  • Apply JMP and DOE methods for data analysis, SPC, t-tests.
  • Adhere to NSG/Pilkington Standards of Business Conduct and values.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.

Job description

  • Design of multi-layer coatings to achieve desired optical and electrical properties.
  • Optically model multi-layer coatings to predict properties.
  • Investigate processing-structure-property relationship as it relates to coating electrical properties.
  • Develop and oversee experimental plans for depositions in the CVD lab.
  • Evaluation of coating performance characteristics of lab, trial, and production samples, including reflected and transmitted color, solar transmission, thermal emissivity, electrical resistance, adhesion, composition, etc.
  • Interpret analysis results to provide feedback and direction to the technical or commercial teams.
  • Collaborate with teams at the UK and Japan Technology Centres.
  • Interact with thin film specialists from outside the NSG Group, including high technology customers and/or universities.
  • Use statistical software (JMP) and methods for data analysis including Design of Experiments methodology, process capability, SPC, t-tests, etc.
  • Adherence to NSG/Pilkington Standards of Business Conduct and its Values and Principles
  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Qualifications Required:
  • D. (or M.S. with relevant work experience) in applied physics, materials science, or a related field.
  • Experience with thin films, preferably for semiconductor or photovoltaic applications.
  • Experience with measurement and analysis of thin films (XRD, XPS, SEM/TEM, spectrophotometry, TOF-SIMS, AFM, etc.)
  • Experience with statistical tools and analysis
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Proficient in the English language (verbal and written).
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (15%).
Qualifications Desired:
  • 2 – 3 years postdoctoral or work experience in deposition and analysis of thin films
