Overview

The Urgent Care (UC) Advanced Practice Provider (APP), including Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, is part of an interdisciplinary team responsible for treating patients of all ages in an urgent care setting. The UC APP examines and treats episodic illnesses, minor injuries, work-related health problems, and performs specialized occupational health exams such as Department of Transportation (DOT) and other fitness-for-duty assessments.

The UC APP provides initial and ongoing assessments of patients' medical, physical, and psychosocial status, including:

• Obtaining relevant health and medical histories
• Performing physical examinations based on age and history
• Conducting preventive screening procedures as appropriate
• Identifying, recording, and updating medical and health risks and needs
• Formulating differential diagnoses based on history, physical exam, and clinical findings
• Assessing the needs of individuals or families based on evaluation data
• Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests
• Prescribing appropriate pharmacologic agents
• Recommending nonpharmacologic interventions
• Performing in-office procedures as approved by supervising or backup physicians

Job Requirements

Education:

Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Family Nurse Practitioner program (no pending graduates)

License:

Licensed to practice by the NCBON (FNP) or NCMB (PA-C)

Certification:

Certified by a recognized national APP board, such as Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), allowing treatment of all ages

BLS Certification required; ACLS and PALS must be obtained after employment begins

DOT Medical Examiner Certification obtained prior to or within the first year of employment

Experience:

At least 2 years of experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, preferably in urgent care. Recent graduates are not considered unless they have 2 years of ER or Urgent Care RN experience or 2 years of EMT/EMT-P experience.

Experience performing procedures such as suturing, splinting/casting, I&D, etc.
