The Advanced EMT (AEMT) provides basic and limited advanced life support care during emergency and interfacility transports. Working under protocol and medical direction, the AEMT performs vascular access, administers approved medications, and manages patients whose needs exceed EMT scope but do not require a paramedic. The AEMT may serve as lead provider on the unit and completes documentation that supports quality care, medical necessity, and billing.
Responsibilities
Patient care and transport
- Respond to emergency calls and scheduled interfacility transports as dispatched.
- Perform primary and secondary assessments, obtain vital signs, and reassess throughout transport.
- Provide BLS care, including airway management, oxygen therapy, CPR, AED use, splinting, and bleeding control.
- Perform AEMT-level skills within state scope and medical direction, which may include:
- Peripheral IV access and fluid administration
- Intraosseous (IO) access, where authorized
- Supraglottic airway placement
- Blood glucose measurement
- Approved medications such as dextrose, naloxone, nitroglycerin, epinephrine, albuterol, and glucagon, per protocol
- Monitor IV lines and maintain ordered fluids during interfacility transfers within AEMT scope.
- Recognize when a patient needs a higher level of care and request ALS or paramedic intercept promptly.
- Assist paramedics with ALS procedures when working on an ALS crew.
- Treat patients and families with dignity, respect, and attention to comfort and privacy.
Leadership and communication
- Act as lead provider on BLS/AEMT units when assigned, directing crew and scene activities.
- Give clear patient reports to receiving facilities, medical control, and other responders.
- Coordinate with dispatch, fire, law enforcement, and hospital staff.
Documentation and compliance
- Complete a thorough ePCR for every patient contact before end of shift.
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient condition to support medical necessity for Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers.
- Obtain required signatures, face sheets, Physician Certification Statements (PCS), and insurance information.
- Follow protocols, HIPAA, infection control, controlled-medication policy, and all company, state, and federal regulations.
Vehicle and equipment
- Complete start-of-shift vehicle, equipment, and medication checks; restock supplies.
- Clean and disinfect the ambulance and equipment after each transport.
- Drive the ambulance safely and legally, following emergency vehicle operation and company policy.
- Report mechanical problems, equipment failures, and incidents promptly.
Professional conduct
- Arrive on time, in uniform, and ready for duty.
- Participate in QA/QI review, continuing education, and skills verification.
- Mentor and assist in training EMTs and students when assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Current Advanced EMT certification in good standing: Ohio AEMT (Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS) and/or Pennsylvania AEMT (PA Department of Health), depending on assigned service area. NREMT-AEMT preferred.
- Current CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers (AHA or equivalent).
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record per company insurance standards.
- Minimum age of 18 (21 may be required by the insurance carrier to drive).
- Ability to pass a background check, drug screen, and pre-employment physical.
- Ability to obtain agency credentialing and medical director authorization within the onboarding period.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English, and basic computer skills for ePCR documentation.
Physical requirements and working conditions
- Lift and carry at least 125 lbs with a partner (250+ lbs combined), and move patients up and down stairs.
- Push, pull, bend, kneel, and stand for long periods, including on uneven ground at emergency scenes.
- Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to assess patients, start IVs, and operate equipment.
- Work in all weather conditions, in a moving vehicle, and in unpredictable or high-stress environments.
- Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious disease, body fluids, hazardous materials, and hostile scenes; PPE is provided and required.
- Work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as scheduled; mandatory holdover may occur on late calls.
Preferred qualifications
- 1+ year of experience as an EMT or AEMT in 911 or interfacility transport.
- ACLS, PALS/PEPP, PHTLS, or equivalent advanced courses.
- EVOC or CEVO driver training.
- Experience with ePCR systems and medical necessity documentation.
- Enrollment in, or plans to pursue, paramedic education.
