Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced (Full Time)
Position, Purpose, and Summary

Under the supervisor, the ideal incumbent will perform duties associated with providing emergency medical care to the sick and injured in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responding to an emergency efficiently and promptly.
  • Administering basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene, en route to the hospital, and in a pre‑hospital setting within the Advanced EMT Scope of Practice, and in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and Company policies.
  • Assessing the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed.
  • Teaching and discussing with professional medical personnel and treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and to arrange reception of patients at the appropriate center.
  • Maintaining order at scenes, including crowd dispersal and restraint of family and friends.
  • Completing patient care forms, insurance forms, evaluation forms, and all other forms in a competent and timely fashion, within 24 hours of service.
  • Adhering to all policies and procedures concerning safety and contamination by blood‑borne pathogens.
  • Educating and/or training squad personnel, EMS trainees, and the public.
  • Ensuring patient privacy in accordance with Company privacy policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Reporting concerns about privacy policies without fear of retaliation.
  • Participating in company privacy training and communicating privacy policy information to coworkers, students, patients, and others in line with Company policy.
  • Responding to dispatcher instructions and driving and operating specially equipped emergency vehicles at safe, controlled speeds, in accordance with laws and Company policies.
  • Ensuring vehicles are well‑maintained, properly stocked, and all equipment is functional.
  • Cleaning, organizing, and restocking vehicles after each transport.
  • Maintaining accurate records of ambulance equipment and other emergency equipment dispatched.
  • Properly documenting each transport on the approved Patient Care Report.
  • Handling telephone communications professionally with confidentiality in mind.
  • Monitoring communication equipment to maintain contact with the dispatcher.
  • Maintaining apparatus and equipment in accordance with all policies and directions.
  • Performing routine tasks in and around the ambulance service building, such as checking, restocking, inventorying, and cleaning apparatus, washing dishes, and emptying trash.
  • Representing the ambulance service at public events.
  • Carrying out any other duty related to the Company as designated by the supervisor or Chief.
  • Being a team player and ensuring system sanitation, readiness, and adherence to quality assurance standards.
  • Being flexible with a 24‑hour shift schedule and responding immediately to a call during the assigned work period.
  • Maintaining knowledge of local geography, maps, and grid‑book systems.
  • Keeping all certifications, licenses, and registrations up to date.
  • Conducting oneself in a courteous, helpful, dignified, and professional manner at all times with patients, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and current unrestricted Pennsylvania Advanced EMT certification.
  • Annual continuing medical education credits and EMSVO endorsement requirements as set by the State EMS Office.
  • Valid driver’s license, A‑EMT certification, American Heart Association BLS (or state‑approved CPR), 16‑hour EVOC/EVDT certification, Hazardous Materials R&I, compliance with NIMS, and other required certifications.
  • Recommended A‑EMT to maintain ACLS, PALS, or APLS certification.
Minimum Experience, Abilities, and Special Requirements
  • One year of experience in rescue and emergency medical services.
  • Basic working knowledge of a Windows PC, Apple iPad, and ability to enter data into a computer/tablet.
Physical Requirements of the Position

The position requires significant physical strength and dexterity and the ability to function in adverse environments with numerous safety risks typical at emergency scenes.

  • Standing/Walking: frequent or continuous during calls; occasional rest as needed.
  • Patient transport, walking, and running short distances at high speed when necessary.

The incumbent must be able to run distances to respond to emergencies where time is of the essence.
