Job summary

Spence-Chapin, a long-standing non-profit in New York City, seeks a Social Worker for Birth Parent Services in an in-person role. You will counsel birth parents, visit hospitals and homes, assist in permanency planning, and support families through the adoption process.

The position requires an MSW with 2+ years of related experience, a valid driver’s license, and willingness to engage in community outreach and training across hospitals and social services.

Qualifications

• MSW from an accredited school of social work, or a related degree required.
• A minimum of two years MSW experience or related experience working directly with clients in a social service setting.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Experience in adoption and/or pregnancy counselling preferred; must have at least one-year counselling.
• Spanish speaking a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provide options counseling to birth parents considering adoption for their newborns and young children.
• Visit clients in hospital and at home as needed.
• Represent the agency at hospital and discharge babies from hospitals to the agency’s interim care program.
• Gather bio-psycho-social background information and write histories.
• Provide therapeutic counseling to individuals and families.
• Provide birth parent outreach, education and training to professionals at local hospitals, clinics and social services.
• Provide weekend on-call coverage approximately one every 6-7 weeks.
