Qualifications

  • Requires license to practice law in Illinois.
  • Requires working knowledge of common law and state/federal admin/regulatory laws.
  • Requires knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedure and rules of evidence.
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory relationships with superiors, other attorneys, employees and the public.
  • Ability to present material clearly in briefs, orders, reports or decisions.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement on procedural problems.
  • Willingness to travel and possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and conducts routine legal research and prepares administrative reports.
  • Confers with the public, witnesses, attorneys, legislators, and board members on interpretations and compliance.
  • Drafts proposed bills, amendments, resolutions, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Revises, codifies and clarifies current legislation; prepares digests, reports and opinions.
  • Participates in the administrative hearings process; prepares pleadings and takes depositions.
  • Advises on routine legal or administrative problems within the department.
  • Reviews and reports on legal processes including petitions and notices.
  • May negotiate with claimants and interested parties to settle claims.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
