JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Larson Transportation Institute in the College of Engineering at Pennsylvania State University is actively seeking a highly motivated candidate to conduct research within the field of Transportation Engineering. This part-time research professor position will primarily focus on autonomous vehicles and dynamic system modeling, contributing to cutting-edge research projects in smart mobility, particularly concerning connected and automated vehicles and their profound impact on multi-scale transportation system modeling.

Qualified candidates are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Possess a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Demonstrate a strong background and hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas of transportation engineering: transportation systems modeling, automated vehicle development and testing, demand management, SLAM and perception, and AI applications in transportation engineering.
  • Exhibit advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Display the ability to conduct high-quality research and showcase research outcomes through prior publications and presentations.
  • Possess excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities.
  • Preferred qualifications for this position include a strong background in mathematical modeling and programming, or substantial hands-on experience in autonomous vehicle development, testing, and simulation.

Key responsibilities associated with this position are as follows:

  • Lead and conduct research activities related to automated and transportation system modeling.
  • Provide technical support to an existing project that focuses on AV and traffic modeling.
  • Author and co-author high-quality journal papers.
  • Collaborate and coordinate research efforts with both internal and external research teams and industry partners.
  • Provide support to the Principal Investigator (PI) in the preparation of grant proposals.
