Position Description

The English Department within the College of Science and Society at the University of Bridgeport invites applications for Adjunct Instructors of English. This position is primarily focused on the delivery of the First-Year Writing (FYW) curriculum. The department seeks dedicated educators who are committed to student success in foundational composition and who can provide high-quality instruction to a diverse student body. While the core need is for composition, instructors may occasionally be considered for other general education courses in areas such as literature, creative writing, film, communications, and digital media as enrollment demands dictate.

Primary Instructional Responsibilities
  • Facilitate all assigned class sessions in strict accordance with the university’s academic calendar and the established goals of the First-Year Writing program.
  • Develop and maintain course materials, including syllabi and lectures, that align with departmental standards and learning outcomes.
  • Provide timely and substantive feedback on student writing assignments to support academic development and successful completion of the course.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to provide individual support and guidance to students.
  • Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System for all course administration, including the posting of syllabi, recording of grades, and management of student communications.
  • Adhere to all university policies regarding academic integrity, grading deadlines, and classroom conduct.
  • Incorporate digital writing practices and university-supported platforms to facilitate course objectives and ensure students develop the digital literacy required for modern academic work.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree in English, Composition and Rhetoric, or a closely related field in the Humanities.
  • Professional experience teaching college-level writing or composition.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple grading deadlines and administrative requirements effectively.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Learning Management Systems (Canvas preferred).
  • Demonstrated digital literacy and the ability to integrate educational technology into the writing classroom, including a constructive and pragmatic approach to Generative AI in alignment with departmental guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant experience specifically teaching First-Year Writing (FYW) and core composition.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and a commitment to inclusive pedagogical practices.
  • Ability to teach across broader general education disciplines, such as literature, creative writing, film, communications, or digital media, should departmental needs arise.
Compensation and Terms of Employment

Compensation for this position is set at a flat rate of $1,000 per credit hour for candidates holding a Master's degree and $1,200 per credit hour for candidates holding a terminal degree (Ph.D. or MFA). This is a part-time, semester-based appointment with no guarantee of continued employment beyond the assigned sections.
