JOB SUMMARY:

The Department of English, World Languages, and Cultural Studies at Bethune-Cookman University invites applications for the position of Adjunct Instructor of English to teach undergraduate courses on a part-time basis.

The Department of English, World Languages, and Cultural Studies is committed to excellence in teaching, interdisciplinary inquiry, student success, and community engagement. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

We seek dedicated teacher-scholars who are committed to student success, excellence in teaching, and creating engaging learning environments that support students from diverse educational, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, including first-generation college students. Successful candidates will demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills, a commitment to inclusive and student-centered pedagogy, and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty in support of the department's educational mission.

MINIMUM EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's degree or earned doctorate in English, Rhetoric, Composition, Writing Studies, Literature, Cultural Studies, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 18 graduate semester hours in English or writing from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to effective undergraduate teaching.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Teach assigned undergraduate courses in accordance with departmental learning outcomes and University policies.
  • Prepare course syllabi, instructional materials, assignments, and assessments.
  • Evaluate student work and submit grades in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student progress in accordance with University policies.
  • Maintain regular communication with students and respond promptly to student inquiries.
  • Utilize the University's learning management system (Canvas) to support instruction.
  • Participate in departmental meetings or professional development activities as appropriate for adjunct faculty.
  • Perform other instructional duties consistent with adjunct faculty appointments.
  • Courses may be assigned in face-to-face, hybrid, or online formats, during daytime or evening hours, depending on departmental needs.
Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Experience teaching first-year writing or composition at the college or university level.
  • Experience using learning management systems such as Canvas.
  • Experience teaching first-generation college students, historically underserved populations, or students from diverse educational backgrounds.
  • Experience with evidence-based writing pedagogy and student-centered instructional practices.
  • Experience teaching in multiple instructional modalities, including online or hybrid environments.
Working Conditions

This position is performed in a standard academic environment.

Faculty should be able to:

  • Move throughout the campus as required.
  • Use computers and instructional technologies.
  • Perform the normal physical activities associated with classroom instruction.
