Job Summary

The adjunct faculty member will work with full‑time faculty, under the general supervision of the Associate Dean, in program and class‑related duties such as classroom (including online) instruction, content design and delivery, and student evaluation. You will teach college‑level courses in the Humanities, Philosophy, and/or World Religions within the Humanities & Languages Division of Salt Lake Community College. Sample courses currently taught include Introduction to Humanities, Introduction to Philosophy, Social Ethics, Reasoning and Rational Decision‑Making, and World Religions. This is a pooled position; the department reviews applications as positions become available. Position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit.

Responsibilities

• Become familiar with and follow the current course curriculum outlines, and engage in accepted best pedagogical practices to maximize student learning.
• Collaborate with the course lead/mentor and other instructors to ensure consistency in course syllabi, pedagogy, assignments, ePortfolio work, testing, grading, and so forth.
• Support the College’s mission, vision, and values by incorporating appropriate cultural material representing a broad variety of ethnicities, national origins, socioeconomic groups and other identities, and using inclusive pedagogical practices in the classroom.
• Maintain accurate and complete student attendance records, grades, and other classroom documentation as applicable. Grades must be maintained on the College’s learning management system.
• Meet with course mentor and/or the hiring supervisor as needed.
• Respond to department inquiries and emails promptly, usually within 2 business days.
• Become familiar with, and abide by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
• Maintain professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
• Provide appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
• Return graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
• Maintain student attendance records (for Financial Aid and departmental purposes) and grades.
• Conduct a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.
• Inform students of progress‑to‑date periodically and assign and submit grades by published deadlines.
• Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
• Prepare and submit incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
• Maintain professional and collegial behavior.
• Handle/respond to student concerns/complaints, and respond to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 2 business days).
• Maintain professional appearance as defined by discipline and/or College procedure.
• Complete all required employee trainings in a timely fashion.
• Know and adhere to FERPA guidelines.
• Provide ADA accommodations as requested.
• Other job‑related duties as required.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
• All Faculty will maintain an on‑site campus presence to encourage in‑person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for online‑only courses.
• You are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/Instructor on a contract‑to‑contract basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment. Your employment may be terminated At Will at any time.
• You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

Minimum Qualifications

• M.A. in Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, American Studies, Art History, European or World History, Literature, Philosophy, or Comparative Religion.
• One year of experience teaching Humanities, Philosophy, or World Religion at the college level.
• Knowledge of high‑impact pedagogical practices, inclusive pedagogical methods, and teaching critical thinking.
• Native or near‑native level of fluency in English.
• Ability to conduct classes in‑person on the SLCC campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in the Humanities, Philosophy, or Religious Studies, or in a related discipline such as Interdisciplinary Studies, American Studies, Art History, World History, Literature, Comparative Religion, Gender Studies, or Ethnic Studies.
• Two or more years of experience teaching Humanities, Philosophy, or World Religion at the college level.
• Training in high‑impact pedagogical practices, inclusive pedagogical methods, and teaching critical thinking.
• Skilled in the use of Canvas or other learning management systems.
• Knowledge of and experience in online instructional methodologies.
