Job summary

Grand Rapids Community College seeks adjunct faculty to teach in-person mathematics courses, from basic statistics to precalculus and math education for preservice teachers. The ideal candidate will be passionate about teaching and committed to student success, delivering high-quality learning experiences.

Positions are adjunct, determined semester-by-semester, with classes offered Monday through Friday at various times. Employment begins with the winter term and continues as openings arise.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics required.
• Master’s degree in Mathematics or Master’s in Mathematics Education with at least 18 graduate hours in Math or related areas required.

• Create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
• Assess student performance, keep accurate records, and report grades by contractual deadline.
• Respond to communications in a timely manner and provide access to course information.
• Follow College policies, syllabus templates, and required materials; meet classes as scheduled; accommodate students per ADA and FERPA policies.

Job description

The College is interested in seeking candidates to teach in-person mathematics classes ranging from Math Essentials for Statistics and Intermediate Algebra through Precalculus, Statistics, and Math Education classes for Preservice Elementary Teachers. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching and a commitment to student success, ensuring a high-quality learning experience for all students.

Adjunct needs are determined on a semester-by-semester basis, as are the number of sections offered each semester. GRCC mathematics classes are held at a variety of times, Monday through Friday. For semester start and end dates, see GRCC’s Academic Calendar .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Teach GRCC course offering(s) in Mathematics.
• Foster an equity-minded learning environment which advances inclusion, reduces equity gaps, and promotes diversity and belonging for all students.
• Create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
• Effectively assess student performance, keep accurate student academic records, and report grades by contractual deadline.
• Make all reasonable efforts to respond to communication in a timely manner and provide reasonable means for student access to course information.
• Comply with standards and requirements expressed in the College’s Policies and the Faculty Association Contract, including, but not limited to:
  • Follow the required syllabus template.
  • Use the required course materials as determined by the department.
  • Meet classes during the time scheduled and for the appropriate length of time required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Make reasonable accommodations as approved by the Disability Support Services to meet students’ needs and in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Follow the College’s policy on the Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA).

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Qualifications

Required:

• Math Essentials for Statistics and Intermediate Algebra: Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics.
• Higher-level courses, the following is required: Master’s degree in Mathematics OR Master’s degree in Mathematics Education with at least 18 hours of graduate work in Pure/Applied Mathematics OR Master’s degree in a closely related field with at least 18 hours of graduate work in Mathematics or closely related coursework.

Preferred:

• Teaching experience at a community college.
• Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and with varying academic skills.

• Pedagogical Skills – Ability to teach complex content clearly, adapt instruction to diverse learners, and facilitate active learning.
