Job summary

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at George Mason University seeks qualified adjunct faculty to teach undergraduate courses on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities include teaching up to three lower-division courses per semester, developing syllabi, communicating with students, grading, and maintaining office hours. A Master’s degree in mathematics and strong pedagogy are required; experience with active learning is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in a related field.
  • At least 18 hours of graduate course work in mathematics which would normally count toward a graduate degree in mathematics.
  • Technologically savvy; able to use email and online learning systems to communicate with students.
  • Clear understanding of curriculum design, pedagogy, and learning outcome alignment.
  • Exceptional communicator with confidence in teaching and presenting to a class.
  • Genuine interest in nurturing the academic growth of students.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and manages the class syllabus and ensuring that the syllabus meets department and university standards.
  • Communicates with your class(es) forAnnouncements; disseminate information efficiently.
  • Grades assigned homework, quizzes, and exams in a timely fashion.
  • Utilizes Canvas to report student learning outcomes.
  • Advises students on how to be successful and achieve goals.
  • Schedules at least two office hours per week; stays updated on innovations in the field.

The Mathematical Sciences Department offers undergraduate,Master’s, and Ph.D. programs in pure, applied, and computationalmathematics. Required Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in an active learning environment;
  • Experience teaching mathematics at a college level;
  • Instructor of record for college level mathematics courses;and
  • Evidence of utilizing active learning pedagogy in theclassroom.
