Job description

The Adjunct Faculty, Graduate Studies position is a part-time position, responsible to provide excellence in teaching through the fulfillment of the mission and strategic goals of the College of Graduate, Online & Adult Learning (CGOAL). The Office of Adult & Graduate Studies (A&GS) offers a variety of Master’s degrees in an online accelerated format.

  • The University of Northwestern – St. Paul is authorized to hire in the following states: CO, IA, IL, KS, MN, MO, ND, NE, SD, TN, TX, WI, WY.

References will be checked upon scheduling interview.

What will I do in this position?

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teach assigned courses
  • Interact with students via discussion forums, classroom presence, etc.
  • Help students succeed in their courses
  • Respond to student questions and concerns in a timely manner
  • Grade student assignments/papers in a timely manner
  • Abide by all university policies
  • Successfully complete Best Practices in Online Teaching training course
  • Act as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ by actively partnering with colleagues of the University to disciple students and help grow intellectually and spiritually.
What will it take to succeed in this position?

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Earned doctorate in discipline in which you want to teach is required.
  • Previous teaching experience with adults and online instruction is preferable but not required.
  • Must be available to teach one evening per week for on-site and/or blended courses.
  • Some courses are also available in the online format.
  • Teaching assignments are not available every semester, only as needed depending on the class size.
  • Continually nurture a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; serve as a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule
  • Ability to integrate Christian worldview into classroom instruction
  • Ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a professional, courteous and tactful manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic computer skills; ability to type accurately and use computer to carry out various job responsibilities (faculty member is responsible for providing his/her own computer and internet connection for work performed outside of the classroom)
  • Ability to pass the background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
  • Understanding of and agreement with Northwestern’s Declaration of Christian Community and Doctrinal Statement is essential
Work Environment:

The work environment involves working for a suburban, Christian university alongside those with a demonstrated commitment and personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a commitment to the mission and values of the University and an agreement to abide by all University policies.

Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation: $874 – $983 per credit based on full course enrollment

  • Compensation will be prorated down if course enrollment minimum is not met. Posted wages are not guaranteed and UNW reserves the right to make pay decisions based on economic and equity considerations.
