Job summary

Virginia Wesleyan University is seeking an adjunct geography instructor to teach Geog 111 and Geog 113 in person for the 2026-2027 academic year in Virginia Beach, VA.

Preference will be given to a candidate with a Ph.D. and college teaching experience. Candidates with an MS or 18 grad hours in Geography will be considered. The role requires strong communication and familiarity with Blackboard LMS, and classes may be day or early evening.

  • Comply with FERPA regulations and coordinate with campus support services as needed.

Job Description

This is a part-time position teaching Geog 111 and GEOG 113 during the 2026-2027 academic year at Virginia Wesleyan University (soon to be Batten University). GEOG 111 is required core coursework for degrees in education and special education and GEOG 113 is a Major requirement for History and Social Science.

Adjunct Faculty – Geography

Geog 111: Physical Geography: A study of the physical earth with an emphasis on the processes of planetary composition, planetary motion, the atmosphere, water, plate tectonics, glaciers, landforms, and other major topics. Environmental issues provide applications to current events and conditions. Basic location identification serves as a foundation for atlas and general thematic map usage.

Geog 113: Human Geography: Provides a synthesis of physical and cultural geographic concepts by developing an understanding of the relationship of the physical world to the cultural through three units: The Physical World, Cultural and Physical Interaction, and Applied Cultural and Physical Processes. Explores the use of maps and other geographic representations, the study of physical processes, the characteristics and distribution of ecosystems, the relationship between human activity and the physical environment, the examination of cultural patterns and networks, and the impact of political forces on physical resources.

The adjunct instructor will teach in person during the day or early evening. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. and demonstrated experience in teaching college-level Geography, although candidates with a M.S. or 18 graduate semester hours in Geography will be considered.

  • Prepare syllabi that meet the VWU syllabus guidelines and provide these to students on the first day of class. Syllabi should also be provided to department chairs.
  • Be on time and prepared for class sessions and grade, provide feedback, and return assignments within a reasonable time period.
  • Communicate with students via office hours and email.
  • Submit mid-term reports, final grades, and C- reports per guidelines provided by the University Registrar.
  • Comply with FERPA regulations.
  • Coordinate with Campus support services as needed to support students.
