Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) seeks part-time adjunct faculty to teach Focused Inquiry courses on an as-needed basis. Primary teaching involves UNIV 111, 112, and/or 200 in a learner-centered sequence, with emphasis on written and oral communication, critical thinking, and collaborative learning.

Applicants must have a master’s degree and demonstrated college-teaching excellence, plus at least three years’ experience in a general education setting.

Responsibilities

Faculty membersteaching in the Department of Focused Inquiry participate in sharedcurricula, with the expectation that students across all sectionsof a course achieve similar learning objectives.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary teaching responsibilities include instruction of UNIV 111,112, and/or 200, which students are expected to complete in theirfirst two years. This three-semester, interdisciplinary coursesequence is learner-centered and promotes integrative thinking aswell as student engagement, with a particular emphasis on writtenand oral communication, critical thinking, collaborative learning,information fluency, and ethical reasoning. All adjunct faculty areexpected to be available to students outside of class via officehours (one hour for each 3-hour class taught) as well as via emailand other electronic communications.

Minimum Qualifications

• Focused Inquiry promotes a multi- and inter-disciplinaryapproach to teaching and learning. We welcome candidates from anyacademic discipline with interest or experience in teachinginterdisciplinary general education courses with an emphasis onwritten and oral communication and critical thinking.
• Evidence of excellence in college-level teaching isrequired.
• At least three years of college teaching experience in a general education curriculum is preferred.
• A master’s degree in an academic discipline is required.

Salary Range:

$1,487 per credit hour
