Job Description

The Adjunct – Astronomy position provides quality instruction and maintains a positive learning environment in the classroom, with major emphasis placed on teaching, supporting, and evaluating students. The Adjunct role provides instruction and monitors teaching/learning effectiveness in courses assigned by the Department Chair or other leadership members. The incumbent must exhibit strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask while engaging large groups of people with complicated material.

Essential Job Functions

• Teach assigned courses as scheduled and exercise oversight of the curriculum in conjunction with the Department’s policies, ensuring rigor and quality of instruction.
• Consider individual differences of students to support a range of appropriate learning activities.
• Participate in the identification of students with academic or other needs and respond with appropriate resources.
• Use technology appropriately to enhance learning and communicate expectations about its use.
• Keep accurate records, maintain attendance records, submit grades timely, and provide progress feedback throughout the semester.
• Distribute accurate syllabi incorporating departmental and institutional requirements.
• Conduct classes punctually and in accordance with the scheduled meeting times.
• Employ assessment techniques to measure students’ performance in achieving course goals and objectives.
• Participate in periodic meetings with department, lead instructor, and chairperson regarding teaching duties and professional development.

Student Engagement & Advisement

• Create a positive classroom atmosphere encouraging active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and learner support.
• Use technology to assist communication with students.
• Encourage a sense of community among students for learning inside and outside the classroom.
• Refer students to appropriate student and academic support services available at the College or in the community.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in the disciplines of Astronomy or Astrophysics.
• Experience in the procedures of a teaching/learning laboratory setting.

Additional Information

State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).

Classroom environment may include in-person or online modalities.

Compensation Details

Compensation: $55.88 per contact hour.

Contact Hour: Two hours equals one contact hour.

Hours: Maximum of 12 contact hours per week.

Full Time/Part Time: Part time.
