Job description

The mission of the USC Rossier School of Education is to prepare leaders to achieve educational equity through practice, research and policy. We work to improve learning opportunities and outcomes in urban settings and to address disparities that affect historically marginalized groups. We teach our students to value and respect the cultural context of the communities in which they work and to interrogate the systems of power that shape policies and practices. Through innovative thinking and research, we strive to solve the most in‑tractable educational problems.

This is a two‑semester appointment consisting of 16 weeks of work in each semester. The Math Mentor works closely with teacher candidates across MIAA coursework to support their development of mathematics content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and equitable instructional practices. The selected mentor will engage with candidates through online platforms, including Zoom and the Learning Management System; provide guidance on assignments and fieldwork‑related learning; and support candidates in analyzing student work, reflecting on instructional decisions, and connecting course concepts to classroom practice. The Math Mentor will maintain regular communication with candidates and collaborate with faculty and program staff to promote candidate success and continuous program improvement. Experience mentoring teachers, supporting adult learners, coaching educators, facilitating professional learning, supervising fieldwork, and/or supporting teacher candidates in mathematics teaching and learning. A California Clear Credential in Foundational Mathematics or Single Subject Mathematics with English Learner Authorization, or an equivalent credential. Current knowledge of California’s adopted P–12 mathematics content standards, frameworks, and accountability systems. Demonstrated skill in supporting candidates’ analysis of student work and student thinking; planning of responsive and equitable mathematics instruction; and reflection on instructional decisions. Experience using online learning platforms, including Zoom and a Learning Management System. Strong written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse candidates, school communities, faculty, and program partners. A demonstrated commitment to advancing educational equity in mathematics teaching and learning.
