Job summary

Lackawanna College in Scranton, PA is seeking an Adjunct Instructor for Academic Development: Reading, Writing, and Math courses. Deliver instruction, develop syllabi, and support student success within an outcomes-based model.

Requirements include an associate degree with English and math credits; a BA/MA in English, Math, or Education is preferred. Daytime availability and prior teaching experience are desired for semester-based work on the main campus.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree including a minimum of 18 credits in English courses for bridge level courses.
  • Associate’s degree including a minimum of 18 credits in Math courses.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English, Math, or Education preferred.
  • English degree with reading certification for our bridge level reading course preferred.
  • Demonstrated prior teaching/training experience.
  • Daytime hour availability.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver effective instruction in Academic Development courses using up-to-date, innovative, and student-centered teaching methods within a strong outcomes-based instructional model.
  • Teach courses such as Basic Writing, Reading for College, Basic Math, Critical Reading, and Fundamentals of Writing.
  • Develop strategies to help developmental education students successfully transition from developmental courses to bridge-level and college-level coursework through curricular alignment.
  • Prepare all course materials, including syllabi, lesson plans, instructional activities, and assessments.
  • Provide academic support, guidance, and mentoring to students regarding academic concerns and success strategies.
  • Complete all required documentation within designated timeframes, including attendance, grades, and student learning outcomes.
  • Utilize the college's student portal and learning management system to maintain attendance, assignments, grades, and other required course information.
  • Complete all required adjunct faculty orientation and onboarding activities upon hire.
  • Communicate regularly with the division Chairperson regarding any questions, concerns, or student-related issues.

Adjunct Instructor – Academic Development: Reading, Writing, and Math Courses
Essential Duties
  • Deliver effective instruction in Academic Development courses using up-to-date, innovative, and student-centered teaching methods within a strong outcomes-based instructional model.
  • Teach courses such as Basic Writing, Reading for College, Basic Math, Critical Reading, and Fundamentals of Writing.

Recommendation for hiring will be made by Academic Development division chair, Karolyn DeMarco. Prior to a final offer of employment, candidates will be required to submit to a PA Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprinting, and provide official transcripts to the Human Resources Department.
