Job Summary

Adjoint Instructors in the Department of Pediatrics – Section ofEmergency Medicine are Hourly Faculty that work at Children'sHospital Colorado (CHCO) and its Network of Care (NOC) in emergencyor urgent care settings. They provide medical care to acutely illand injured infants, children, and adolescents in our 24/7 andafterhours network of emergency/urgent care facilities. In thisrole, they perform history and physical examinations to define andexecute appropriate workup that leads to diagnosis, treatment, anddisposition. Work in this setting requires technical and proceduralskills and provision of procedural sedation and may requirepediatric resuscitation and advanced life support. In addition,Adjoint Faculty are involved with institutional quality and patientsafety improvement initiatives and development of clinical careguidelines that aim to provide consistent, quality care throughoutour institution, and are core members of the clinical Pediatricteaching staff for Department of Pediatrics in the School ofMedicine

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical coverage in a mixed shift model (days, evenings,nights, weekends, and holidays) for a 24/7 Emergency care network. Ability to cover shifts at all sites, including Colorado Springs, is required.
  • Clinical responsibilities include Pediatric urgent and emergencycare:
    • Pediatric observation unit medicine
    • Rotating sick-call (Jeopardy) coverage
  • Attendance and participation in section wide meetings isrequired. Attendance at Morbidity and Mortality Conference, CME andlocal site meetings is recommended, but voluntary
  • Maintenance of skills required for provision of high quality,patient centered, safe urgent/emergent care of children.

The Children's Hospital in Colorado Springs hasthe only dedicated pediatric Emergency Department in SouthernColorado serving as a level two pediatric trauma designation with115 hospital beds (16 PICU, 50 NICU, and 49 medicine/ surgery). Wehave a growing number of subspecialty services available to providetopnotch pediatric care – both inpatient and outpatient.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree
  • Completion of accredited residency in Pediatrics or combinedMedicine-Pediatrics
  • Board Certified or eligible in Pediatrics
  • Active certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • Active Colorado Medical License
  • Active Colorado State DEA license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in pediatric acute careenvironment (OR completion of a Pediatric Residency program withsignificant experience in Urgent Care and electives and/orextra-clinical activities that demonstrate interest in andpreparedness for pediatric urgent care)
  • Experience teaching medical students and residents.
  • Experience supervising/collaborating with Advanced PracticeProviders
  • Prior use of EPIC
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Initial interpretation of plain radiographs
  • Laceration repair (including vermillion border and nail bedrepair
  • Incision and drainage
  • Nerve blocks
  • Advanced understanding of pediatric disease and injuries
  • Understanding of a familiarity with resources to assist makingclinical decisions and diagnosis.

Skills

  • Use of electronic medical record (EPIC)
  • Teaching of medical learners
  • Foreign body removal
  • Reduction of minor digit fractures of joint dislocations
  • Lumbar Puncture
  • IV fluid management of electrolyte or endocrinederangements
