Job summary

Qualifications

  • Comfort working with adults with disabilities and diverse participants.

Responsibilities

  • Adapt activities to participant needs and provide encouragement.
  • Lead and prepare materials for activities.
  • Supervise and guide participants at all times and ensure safety.
  • Assist participants and recognize when to offer help.
  • Encourage social interactions and advocate for participants.
  • Maintain records and handle registrations and forms.
  • Attend trainings and meetings and wear designated staff attire.

Job description

DATES/HOURS & LOCATION

Dates, hours and locations will vary. Programs are held 2-3 times per month, each program lasting on average 2-3 hours at various sites in Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie and Richfield. Programs may include Bowling, Good Happenings, Movies & Munchies and Cardio Fitness.

NATURE OF WORK

Under the supervision of the Adaptive Recreation Supervisor, the Adaptive Leader/Specialist works independently to provide individuals with all abilities the opportunity to participate in recreation and leisure programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Provides the opportunity for success for all participants by adapting activities, providing encouragement, managing behaviors, and providing any additional assistance as needed.
  • Prepares materials for and leads activities.
  • Supervises and guides participants at all times.
  • Ensures safety for participants.
  • Assists participants as needed and recognizes when to offer assistance and when to allow natural dynamics to happen in order to help all individuals become part of the group.
  • Encourages social interactions between and among all participants.
  • Serves as an advocate for individuals with disabilities.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with staff, supervisors and program participants and their family members.
  • Prepares necessary reports & forms (i.e. attendance sheets, accident reports, etc.)
  • Handles registration money and gives back correct change.
  • Attends and participates in all staff trainings and meetings.
  • Wears appropriate clothing for planned programs, including designated staff shirt.
  • Coordinates efforts to ensure Richfield is an equitable, inclusive and respectful organization and supports the City's mission, vision and core values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES
  • Ability to work effectively and communicate with Adaptive Recreation Supervisor, co-workers, volunteers, participants and caregivers/parents.
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts, arriving on time ready to work. If you are going to miss a shift due to illness or other commitments, you must notify the Adaptive Recreation Supervisor as soon as possible. You may be responsible for finding your own replacement in the event of an absence.
  • Enthusiasm to work with adults with disabilities.
  • Ability to refrain from cell phone usage during programs. Cell phone usage is prohibited during programs.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Educational background and/or experience working with various disabilities.
  • One or more years of experience working in community recreation or education programs.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese or other non-English language prevalent in the City of Richfield.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands that are described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Must have the ability to:

  • Maintain physical condition necessary for considerable physical activity such as standing, walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, twisting, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, squatting, and lifting materials and supplies ranging from 20-60 lbs.
