The Schukar Unit is an intimate acute medicine unit with a bed capacity of 13 adult patients. Our nurses specialize in caring for patients with complex medical conditions including renal, endocrine, neurological, GI/GU, pulmonary, infectious disease, and cardiology conditions.

Acute Medicine Registered Nurses provide high-quality care for patients experiencing a variety of acute medical conditions. They work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to deliver timely and effective treatment.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. It is recognized for excellence in nursing care and was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
The Schukar department admits patients exclusively through the Patient Placement Center, including direct admits from various sources. They provide necessary services, accommodate pre- and post-procedural patients, and handle outpatient procedures such as blood draws and tube removals for transplant patients, ENT minor outpatient procedures, among others. The patient population is adult. The unit operates Monday 0700 to Saturday 1900, with RN and tech on call when closed. CNM is on call 24/7. All admissions must be through the Patient Placement Center. The unit accepts all types of patients except vented, ICU, or labor and delivery patients, based on needs.
Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the standards of nursing care.
