Job summary

The City of Gardena Recreation Department seeks a detail-oriented professional to coordinate and deliver diverse programs for all ages. You will plan activities, supervise staff and volunteers, and ensure high-quality experiences in camps, aquatics, youth and senior programs.

You'll develop promotional materials, manage registrations, and prepare reports on program effectiveness while working under the Recreation Supervisor. Valid driver’s license required.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or 60 college credits in recreation, education, administration or closely related field.
• Equivalent to three years of experience as a Recreation Leader in municipal/community services or related programs.
• Valid Class C California Driver's License required.

Job description

Under direction of the Recreation Supervisor, coordinates, organizes, and conducts a variety of specialized recreational, educational, and community service programs, including, but not limited to: day camps, aquatics, youth, seniors, sports, teens, classes, special events, and after school programs; develops, plans, and implements program activities; coordinates contractual services; supervises part-time, volunteer, and contract personnel; performs related work as required.

Representative Duties

• Assists the Recreation Coordinator with the implementation of goals and objectives involved in the operation of assignments.
• Works directly with all participants; plans recreational and social activities suited to the needs of the participants (youth, teens and seniors); prepares or coordinates the development of event publicity, including news releases flyers, pamphlets, and brochures and attends events as needed; maintains records and develops reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness; coordinates the acquisition of materials and equipment.
• Assists public at counter/front desk, accepts registration using recreation software, answers incoming calls.
• Interfaces with customers, organizations, or other partners to determine needs for activities, events, and programs.
• Performs related duties as required.

Working Conditions

Available to work varied shifts, including evenings, early mornings, weekends, and holidays. Position requires prolonged standing, sitting, walking on level or unleveled surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 50 pounds or more. This position requires near and far vision for reading written documents and in the observation of participants during activities. Acute hearing is also required in providing customer service to public and /or assistance in facility, classroom, or outdoors. Will also be working in outdoor area and may be exposed to loud noises and extreme weather conditions.

Education and Experience

An Associate’s degree or 60 college credits completed from an accredited college or university with emphases in Recreation, Education, Administration or closely related field AND equivalent to three (3) years of related experience as a Recreation Leader within a municipal/community services or educational operation or progressively responsible work experience in after school, educational, or municipal recreation programming.

Knowledge and Abilities

Procedures for implementing a variety of recreational/educational activities and programs through community participation; create program content for specialized community recreation/educational activities; basic personnel management principles, practices and techniques including methods for employee selection, supervision, evaluation and training; and common recreational, social, and educational needs of various age groups.

License

Must have and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License.

• Oral Interview - 70% of total score
