Job summary

VON seeks an Activity Aide to provide quality support and care for participants in the Adult Day Program. You will implement planned activities within the VON CQI framework and adhere to policies, procedures, standards, and applicable legislation.

Responsibilities include developing client service plans, coordinating with caregivers and staff, and delivering engaging activities to promote mobility and social interaction. A valid First Aid/CPR and Food Handler certification are required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or certificate from a community college level program in health care, social science or recreation with emphasis on Gerontology.
  • Current First Aid and CPR and Food Handler’s certificates required.
  • GPA, Montessori certification an asset.
  • 1-2 years of recent experience in Adult Day Services or working with groups of clients is an asset.
  • Experience with adults and caregivers, including those with Alzheimer’s or cognitive impairments, is a requirement.

  • Contributes to the development of the service plan for each client attending the program.
  • Implements, evaluates and revises service plans with family/caregivers and the internal team.
  • Collaborates with Recreational Therapist/Program Coordinator in planning social and recreational programs.
  • Participates in group activities to stimulate mobility, language, reminiscing, group identity and listening skills.
  • Assists clients with Activities of Daily Living as required (toileting, personal hygiene, medication assistance).
  • Identifies risk factors and introduces interventions to minimize incidents.
  • Ensures safety and security for clients, volunteers and staff.
  • Utilizes volunteers’ talents within the program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Activity Aide provides quality support and care for individuals attending the Adult Day Programs by implementing planned program of activities within the framework of continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), VON philosophy, policies and procedures, standards and applicable legislation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the development of the service plan for each client attending the Adult Day Program.
  • Implements, evaluates and revises service plans on an ongoing basis in collaboration with the family/caregivers and internal team.
  • Collaborates with the Recreational Therapist and/or Program Coordinator in planning and implementing social and recreational programs.
  • Participates in group activities to stimulate mobility, language, reminiscing, group identity and listening skills of clients.
  • Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as required (toileting, personal hygiene, medication assistance.
  • Collaborates with the team to identify risk factors and introduce interventions to minimize and eliminate client incidents.
  • Ensures safety and security measures for the client, volunteers and staff.
  • Utilizes volunteers’ talents and expertise within the program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Promotes a safe and healthy workplace ensuring workplace conduct and activities are in accordance with the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and compliant with the VON Safety Management System, including all Policies, Safe Work Practices and Procedures
  • Abides by all VON policies and work practices
  • Abides by all confidentiality and protection of personal information policies, regulations and practices and ensures appropriate safeguards are in place within their role
  • Works in collaboration with other staff in a team approach to service delivery
External and Internal Relationships
  • Collaboration with Program Coordinator, Recreation Therapist, RPN, Supervisor and Manager
Education, Designations and Experience
  • Diploma or Certificate from a Community College level program or equivalent in health care, social science or recreation with an emphasis on Gerontology
  • Current First Aid and CPR and Food Handler’s certificates required
  • Certification with GPA, Montessori an asset
  • 1-2 years of recent experience in Adult Day Services or working with groups of clients is an asset.
  • Experience in working with adults, especially individuals (and their caregivers), with Alzheimer disease and other cognitive impairments and/or physical disabilities in a social setting a requirement
Skill Requirements
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Good observational skills related to client functioning abilities.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to take direction, as well as to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Other
  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check
  • Must have personal vehicle and possess both a current driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or a Child Abuse Registry Check may be required
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Working conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
