Job summary

Senior Community Care of Kentucky PACE, a program of Volunteers of America National Services (VOANS), seeks an Activities Assistant in Louisville, KY to support activities for older adults and assist with daily living tasks under supervision.

Primary duties include planning social, therapeutic and leisure programs, with a schedule of M–F 8a–5p and occasional weekends. VOANS offers a comprehensive benefits package and career development opportunities.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year’s experience with frail or elderly population preferred.
  • Must pass background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and assist in large groups, small groups, 1:1 activities (exercise, arts and crafts, games).
  • Assist in assessing participants’ functional status for activities participation.
  • Develop and implement recreational activities meeting participants’ interests and abilities.

OBJECTIVE:

Under the supervision of the Activities Coordinator, is responsible for assisting with the implementation of activities for participants tailored to the needs and limitations of the elderly. Assists participants with non-skilled Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Provides one-on-one assistance with participants or preparing for upcoming activities. Assist with planning social, therapeutic and leisure programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Required
  • HS diploma or equivalent
  • Must have medical clearance for communicable diseases and up-to-date immunizations before having direct participant contact.
  • Must have one year’s experience working with the frail or elderly population.
  • Must be able to pass Background Check and Drug Screen.
Preferred
  • Must have one year experience providing activities programming to elderly population.
  • CNA or PCA experience
  • Bilingual skills are a plus!
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of how to use and maintain materials and equipment of need to provide recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of safety requirements when providing and implementing recreational.
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with participants, coworkers, medical staff, and the public.
  • Able to identify and recommend problem resolution.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Leads and/or assists in large groups, small groups 1:1’s and individual activities (exercise, arts and crafts, games, current events, sensory, etc.).
  • Assists Activities Director in assessing and reassessing participants’ functional status in relationship to participation in recreational activities.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of recreational activities that meet the interests, needs and capabilities of participants under the supervision of Activities Director.
  • Completes assigned activity charting and reporting as assigned by Activities Director.
  • Assists in the organizing of special events, outings as assigned.
  • Assists with preparing and cleaning up after activities.
  • Attends any meetings regarding participant care as assigned by Activities Director.
  • Assists Day Center staff as directed by Activities Director, such as lunch service and arrival of participants as appropriate.
  • Assists in the ordering of supplies for department as requested and maintains equipment in good condition.
  • Acts within the scope of his or her authority to practice.
