Job summary

LanguageLine Solutions is seeking an Acholi Interpreter to work from home in the United States. As an independent contractor, you will interpret calls between Acholi and English speakers across various industries including Healthcare and Law Enforcement.

Fluency in Acholi and English is required, along with excellent listening and neutrality skills. This position offers flexibility and the opportunity to provide essential communication services.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be able to adapt to technology enhancements.
  • Must not be currently employed by a LanguageLine client.

Responsibilities

  • Handle calls on demand and interpret conversations between Acholi and English speakers.
  • Maintain professionalism and courtesy during calls.
  • Follow client instructions and avoid interaction with LEPs without permission.

This is an independent contractor position and therefore not eligible for employee benefits.

Position Overview

The Acholi Telephone Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand and rendering the meaning of conversations between Acholi and English speakers across a wide range of industries, including Healthcare, Government, Insurance, Finance, Utilities, Travel & Hospitality, General Business, Law Enforcement, Court, and 911. The interpreter processes information quickly, concisely, and recognizes sensitive cultural differences while maintaining professionalism and courtesy at all times.

Essential Job Functions

Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.

Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.

Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.

Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the interpreting sessions.

Remain calm during interpreting sessions, even when primary speakers are incoherent or upset, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.

Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.

Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol to ensure client expectations are met with the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP), avoiding interaction with the LEP without the client’s permission.

Understand protocol and terminology for various industries including, but not limited to, Medical, Insurance, Finance, and Law.

Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment.

Some calls may be highly emotional and/or stressful. The interpreter may need to remain on a call for extended periods without breaks due to the nature of the call or may, at times, experience high call volumes. The interpreter must provide service within company standards in this dynamic environment.

Qualifications
  • Fluency in Acholi and English, including cultural dynamics.
  • Ability to assess regional and accent differences to aid communication with the LEP.
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high accuracy.
  • Ability to concentrate, remain detached, neutral, and objective during sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation and/or gender expression.
  • Educational or work experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation (preferred).
  • At least 18 years of age; legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Reading and writing in the requested languages is highly preferred.
  • Must be able to adapt to technology enhancements and meet client demands.
  • No current employment with a LanguageLine Solutions client or affiliated business.
  • Post‑offer background check and/or drug screen may be required based on location.
Technical Requirements
  • Dedicated personal device for business purposes (desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone).
  • Operating systems: Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS (desktop/laptop); iPadOS or Android (tablet); iOS or Android (smartphone).
  • Excluded brands: Kaspersky products, Huawei hardware.
  • High‑speed internet with at least 5Mbps download, 3Mbps upload, <100ms ping, and <30ms jitter.
  • Access to a quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
Physical Requirements
  • Operate keyboard and mouse while remaining stationary in front of a computer most of the workday.
  • Operate company software and systems to perform all job functions.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to type or write.
  • Capable of lifting up to 26lbs.
  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone).
