Job summary

Job Title: Akateko Interpreter

Location: Work at Home, United States

Employment Type: Independent Contractor

Pay: $0.75 - $0.90 per minute

Job Summary: The Akateko Telephone Interpreter provides live, on‑demand interpretation between Akateko and English speakers across a wide range of industries, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and emergency services.

Position Overview

As an Akateko Phone Interpreter, you will handle calls as needed, ensuring accurate, culturally sensitive interpretation while maintaining professionalism and adhering to industry protocols.

Essential Job Functions
  • Respond to interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Render correct concepts and meanings, avoiding omissions or additions.
  • Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and remain calm, particularly during emergency situations such as 911 calls.
  • Ensure punctuality and availability during work hours.
  • Follow client instructions and protocols to meet client expectations.
  • Maintain confidentiality and avoid interacting with the Limited English‑Speaking Person (LEP) without client permission.
  • Understand industry terminology for medical, insurance, finance, and law sectors.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and work effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Remain on calls that may involve sensitive topics such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and sexual orientation/gender expression issues.
  • Provide uninterrupted service during high‑volume or emotionally charged calls, as required by company standards.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in Akateko and English, with strong cultural competency.
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to maintain accuracy.
  • Capacity to concentrate, remain detached, neutral, and objective during sensitive conversations.
  • Education or work experience in language‑related fields (e.g., teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation) preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to technology enhancements and client demands.
  • Minimum age 18 years and legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Work authorization that does not require future visa sponsorship (e.g., H‑1B, F‑1 OPT, TN).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong written literacy in the required languages is highly preferred.
Technical Requirements
  • Dedicated personal device (desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone) with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, iPadOS, or Android.
  • High‑speed internet: download >=5Mbps, upload >=3Mbps, ping <=300ms, jitter <=30ms.
  • Quiet workspace free from background noise or distractions.
Physical Requirements
  • Operation of keyboard and mouse; stationary position in front of a computer for most of the day.
  • Typing or writing capability; manual dexterity sufficient for keying.
  • Ability to lift up to 26lbs.
  • Potential exposure to moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone).
