Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Montgomery seeks an Academic teacher to facilitate GEAR UP academic support and early college/career activities for middle and high school students in under-resourced communities. You will provide lead guidance to GEAR UP staff and may supervise student workers, ensuring objectives are met and compliance standards are followed.

You will develop lessons, coordinate bi-monthly meetings, and work with Counselors and the Program Director to achieve enrichment and academic goals

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Experience in education or youth programs preferred.
  • Ability to lead activities and manage groups.

Responsibilities

  • Developing appropriate lessons, activities and field trips that includes bi-monthly meetings.
  • Collaborate with Program Director, and Counselors to ensure that objectives are reached.
  • Maintaining accurate records including attendance sheets, surveys, and staff logs.
  • Maintaining an organized and efficient meeting room space.
  • Adhering to all Gear Up and district professional expectations and compliance issues.
  • Creating a positive, achievement-oriented, organized, and engaging learning environment.
  • Motivating and holding students to high academic and behavioral expectations.
  • Providing consistent rewards and/or consequences for scholar behavior grounded in positive discipline.
  • Empowering students to make positive choices and serving as a role model.
  • Being accountable for meeting students’ individual academic and instructional needs.
  • Ensuring enrichment and academic goals are met for each scholar.
  • Creating and directing project-based learning
  • Supervising students during guest speaker engagements, field trips, and scheduled workshops.

Job description

This position will help facilitate GEAR UP academic support and early college/career activities, programs, events and services for middle and high schools students in order to increase access to higher education to educationally and economically disadvantaged students; provides lead-level guidance to lower-level GEAR UP staff and may lead the work of student workers. This position must be filled by Academic teachers.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse populations.
  • Desire to work with middle school students and their families in under-resourced communities.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and technological (computer/internet) skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and influence students, staff, community members & families.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability.
  • Committed to the goals of the program and approach.
