Job summary

Smithfield Foods, Inc. is seeking an Accounts Payable specialist to join our Treasury Operations team in Smithfield, VA. You will handle payment runs in SAP, Basware research, Positive Pay and bank portal activity, and support month-end close and audits.

You should have 2+ years in AP or Treasury, with SAP/Basware experience, strong Excel and Word skills, and a proven ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail and a proactive work style.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; 2+ years in AP or Treasury Ops.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Experience with SAP and Basware strongly preferred; proficiency in MS Office (Excel/Word).

Responsibilities

• Execute scheduled SAP payment runs with accuracy and timeliness.
• Research Basware invoice and payment status.
• Manage Positive Pay and bank portal activity.
• Resolve uncashed checks and vendor inquiries.
• Support month-end close and audit requests.
• Document management and retention per policy.
• Assist hog procurement payments and vendor coordination.
• Provide mailroom support as needed.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

• SAP Payment Runs: Execute scheduled payment runs in SAP, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with internal controls.
• Basware Research: Investigate invoice and payment status within Basware to support issue resolution and internal inquiries.
• Positive Pay & Bank Portal Activity: Upload Positive Pay files and manage transactions through bank portals; monitor and resolve discrepancies.
• Uncashed Check Resolution: Research and resolve outstanding or uncashed checks, including communication with vendors and internal departments.
• Mailroom Support: Sort and distribute incoming mail, including checks and vendor correspondence, ensuring timely handling.
• Hog Procurement Support: Assist with payment-related tasks tied to hog procurement, including coordination with internal teams and vendors.
• Vendor Communication: Respond to inquiries and resolve payment issues via phone and email, maintaining professional relationships.
• Month-End & Audit Support: Assist with accruals, journal entries, and internal/external audit requests.
• Document Management: Maintain accurate records in accordance with document retention policies; prepare batches for scanning and off-site storage.
• Special Projects: Participate in ad hoc projects and process improvement initiatives as assigned.

WHAT WE’RE SEEKING:

Ability to work effectively and manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. A proactive, hands‑on approach with a strong work ethic. Strong understanding of payables workflows and financial systems.

The expected pay range for this position is $19.23 - $28.85 per hour. Smithfield Foods provides pay ranges that reflect its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the company reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of hire. Individual compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, location of the position, the candidate’s qualifications and experience, internal equity, external market pay for comparable positions and budget considerations.
