Job Description

The City of Portage is looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Accounting Supervisor to join our Finance Team! This position is vital for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the City’s financial operations and supervises the Accounts Payable and Payroll functions.

What You'll Do:

  • Supervise daily operations of Accounts Payable and Payroll staff.
  • Coordinate daily banking functions, including initiating EFTs and monitoring positive pay.
  • Review and approve invoices for payment to ensure compliance with city policies and accounting standards.
  • Review payroll information, process payroll-related banking transactions and post journal entries.
  • Reconcile monthly bank statements and ensure accuracy of financial records.
  • Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, ensuring timely and accurate postings.
  • Maintain vendor records and review W-9 forms for compliance and accuracy.
  • Monitor credit card and purchasing card transactions, allocate costs to appropriate departments, and ensure compliance with policies.
  • Initiate and coordinate timely debt payments.
  • Review monthly investment report and record quarterly interest.
  • Work with departments on reconciling and recording transactions tracked outside of the general ledger.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting, including acquisitions, disposals, and depreciation.
  • Assist with annual audit preparation and respond to auditor inquiries.
  • Assist with annual budget preparation, including utilizing budget software, gathering department information, and review of budget entry.
  • Maintain chart of accounts and assist in general ledger updates as needed.
  • Assist with risk management insurance programs.
  • Support the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

What We're Looking For:

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Strong understanding of government accounting principles (GAAP and GASB preferred).
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Must successfully complete an accounting assessment.

****Preferred Items:

  • Experience in municipal or public sector accounting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with BS&A accounting software.
