Job description

StevenDouglas is proud to be partnering exclusively with a well-established and growing construction and design firm headquartered in Middlesex County, NJ to identify a driven Accounting Supervisor. This is a high-impact role for a seasoned financial professional who thrives at the intersection of project-based accounting and operational oversight. The ideal candidate brings a collaborative mindset, a passion for process excellence, and a solid command of construction finance — and is ready to serve as a key financial voice within a dynamic, project-driven organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and maintain monthly work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, partnering closely with project teams to ensure job costs, approved change orders, and revised completion estimates are fully reconciled and accurately reflected in project margins.
  • Lead the end-to-end billing lifecycle, including AIA contract billing, invoice certification, and coordination with project management to confirm timely submission of accurate, progress-aligned invoices.
  • Drive the monthly accounting close cycle, including balance sheet reconciliations, preparation of financial statements, cost variance reporting, and rolling cash flow projections.
  • Proactively monitor project-level spending against approved budgets, scrutinize subcontractor and vendor invoices, flag cost overruns, and provide forward-looking visibility into overall corporate expenditure trends.
  • Champion adoption of the company's recently deployed ERP platform, identifying automation and workflow improvements that reduce manual effort and improve data integrity across the finance function.
  • Oversee accounts receivable health, including retention tracking, and collaborate with operations leadership to accelerate collections and minimize aged balances.
  • Design, document, and continuously evaluate internal financial controls and accounting policies to mitigate risk, support audit readiness, and scale effectively alongside the company's growth trajectory.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 3 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years within a construction or specialty contracting environment — direct familiarity with project-based accounting and WIP schedules is essential.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • Hands-on proficiency with construction-focused ERP or accounting software such as Foundation, Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, or a comparable platform; advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, complex lookups) are required.
  • Demonstrated experience building or strengthening internal controls and financial procedures within fast-paced, high-growth organizations where scalable infrastructure is a priority.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with a proven ability to translate financial data into actionable insights for non-finance stakeholders including project managers, operations teams, and senior leadership.
