The Controller will oversee the organization’s accounting and financial operations, partnering closely with executive leadership and operational teams to provide accurate financial reporting, strengthen accounting processes and support business growth. This role will have significant responsibility for construction accounting, job costing, project financials, cash flow forecasting and financial controls.
The ideal candidate is a hands‑on accounting leader with deep construction industry experience who understands how project performance, revenue recognition, cash flow and financial strategy intersect. This individual should be comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment, improving processes and systems and collaborating with project managers, estimators and senior leadership.
This role is on a CFO succession track.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead monthly, quarterly and annual financial close processes and ensure timely, accurate reporting.
- Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and related accounting functions.
- Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
- Monitor project financial performance, including budget-to-actual costs, margins and profitability.
- Partner with project managers and estimators to identify financial risks, cost variances and opportunities to improve project performance.
- Manage construction billing, including municipal billing, owner draws, retainage and related documentation.
- Review subcontractor requisitions, lien waivers, insurance requirements and compliance documentation.
- Track and evaluate project change orders and their impact on profitability.
- Prepare executive-level financial reporting, including P&L, balance sheet and cash flow analysis.
- Develop and maintain forward-looking cash flow forecasts based on project schedules and business needs.
- Manage banking relationships, operating accounts and other financial resources.
- Oversee financial requirements related to insurance, bonding and lender relationships.
- Coordinate with external CPA firms and support annual audits and other financial reviews.
- Manage lender reporting and monitor compliance with financial covenants.
- Establish and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures and standard operating processes.
- Ensure compliance with applicable tax, sales tax, prevailing wage and other financial reporting requirements.
- Improve integration between accounting and project management systems.
- Lead, mentor and develop accounting personnel.
- Oversee financial aspects of payroll, benefits and related HR reporting.
- Support financial analysis related to potential acquisitions, due diligence and integration initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
- Seven to 10 years of accounting leadership experience within the construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting, including job costing, WIP schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Experience with municipal construction billing, owner draws and retainage.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing financial reporting and accounting operations.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial controls.
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling.
- Experience managing cash flow forecasting and project-based financial analysis.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to work across finance, operations and executive teams.
- Experience developing and improving accounting processes and SOPs.
- CPA, CMA or CCIFP certification preferred.
- Experience in a high‑growth or acquisition‑focused organization preferred.
- Experience supporting M&A due diligence and post‑acquisition integration is a plus.
