Job summary

Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls, IA, seeks an Accounting Specialist to join our in‑person Finance team. The role offers a diverse workload and the chance to contribute to our nonprofit financial operations.

The ideal candidate will have an accounting degree (or 5+ years of experience), solid GAAP knowledge, and proficiency with Workday, Excel, and accounting software. A strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities is essential.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field or 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP; nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience journal entries, balance/GL reconciliation, and AP review.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post month-end journal entries in the appropriate period.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and balance general ledger accounts.
  • Review financial statements, balance sheets, and schedules for accuracy.
  • Perform cash transactions and reconciliations with strong internal controls.
  • Review Accounts Payable invoices for correct GL coding and Expenses.

Job description

Western Home Communities is expanding our Accounting Department and is excited to add an Accounting Specialist to our growing Finance team. This is a full‑time, in‑person position that offers a diverse workload and the opportunity to play an important role in our organization's financial operations. We're looking for a detail‑oriented accounting professional who enjoys solving problems, managing multiple priorities, and taking ownership of their work. The ideal candidate is self‑motivated, works well independently, and is committed to producing accurate, high‑quality financial information.

What You’ll Do
  • Prepare and post month‑end journal entries while ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and in the appropriate accounting period.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and balance general ledger accounts to maintain accurate financial records.
  • Review and analyze financial statements, balance sheet accounts, and supporting schedules to identify discrepancies and ensure accuracy.
  • Perform cash transactions and reconciliations while maintaining strong internal controls.
  • Review Accounts Payable invoices for accurate general ledger coding and ensure expenses are assigned to the appropriate accounts.
  • Assist with monthly financial reporting, annual audit preparation, cost reports, and budgeting activities.
  • Analyze financial activity, research variances, and recommend solutions to resolve discrepancies.
  • Utilize Workday and other accounting software to process cash, general ledger, and financial transactions.
  • Successfully manage multiple priorities and a diverse workload while consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Work independently with strong initiative while collaborating effectively with the Finance team and other departments.
Requirements
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience demonstrating equivalent knowledge and skills.
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP); nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, balancing general ledger accounts, reconciling cash and bank accounts, and analyzing financial statements.
  • Experience reviewing general ledger coding and ensuring the accuracy of Accounts Payable transactions.
  • Ability to analyze accounting data, identify discrepancies, and resolve issues through effective problem‑solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities, prioritize work, and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Self‑motivated with the ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Workday experience preferred, but not required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and accounting software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with employees, vendors, and leadership.
