Job summary

Blue Shield of California is seeking an Accountant Consultant to lead day-to-day accounting and reporting, interpret complex GAAP issues, and mentor the team. You will work with the Accounting Manager to manage priorities, risks, and deliverables, ensuring audit-ready disclosures and strong controls.

The role emphasizes ownership, critical thinking, and collaboration with leadership, auditors, and business partners, with hybrid in-office expectations and ongoing process improvement.

Qualifications

• Requires a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related field.
• Requires at least 8 years of experience in accounting or public accounting.
• Requires comprehensive and current understanding of U.S. GAAP and ability to apply judgment to complex/non-routine matters.
• Ability to research and apply accounting standards and document analysis with rationale.
• Supports preparation of financial statements and disclosures that are audit-ready.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with leadership, auditors, and partners.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for complete documentation.
• Ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines.
• Experience supporting audits, financial statements, disclosures, controls or policy implementation preferred.
• CPA license or public accounting experience preferred.
• Oracle or Workday ERP experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day accounting and reporting activities and resolve complex technical matters.
• Provide review, guidance, and oversight to the accounting team.
• Partner with Accounting Manager to manage priorities, risks, and deliverables.
• Ensure high-quality execution across close, reporting, audits, and policy activities.
• Document conclusions and communicate recommendations to leadership and partners.
• Coach team members and support continuous improvement of accounting processes and controls.
