The Real Estate Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial reporting functions for a portfolio of commercial, multifamily, retail, industrial, and/or mixed-use properties. This role manages month-end close activities, financial statement preparation, budgeting support, joint venture accounting, lender reporting, and compliance with GAAP. The ideal candidate will possess strong real estate accounting experience, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to partner effectively with property management, asset management, development, and executive leadership teams.
Essential Responsibilities
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for assigned real estate entities and property portfolios.
- Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of GAAP-compliant financial reporting packages.
- Perform variance analysis and provide explanations of operating results to management.
- Oversee fixed asset accounting, depreciation schedules, and capitalization policies.
- Coordinate annual audits and assist with tax compliance activities.
- Oversee accounting for multiple properties, joint ventures, and ownership structures.
- Review property-level financial statements, operating metrics, and cash flow reporting.
- Manage CAM reconciliations, tenant recoveries, and lease-related accounting.
- Coordinate acquisition, disposition, refinancing, and purchase accounting activities.
- Review lender reporting requirements and ensure compliance with debt covenants.

- Oversee accounting for multiple properties, joint ventures, and ownership structures.

- Coordinate acquisition, disposition, refinancing, and purchase accounting activities.
- Review lender reporting requirements and ensure compliance with debt covenants.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Partner with Asset Management and Operations to develop annual budgets and forecasts.
- Monitor property performance against budget and provide actionable financial insights.
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and support strategic planning initiatives.
- Assist leadership with portfolio analytics, investment reporting, and financial modeling.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Maintain and optimize property accounting systems, including Yardi, MRI, RealPage, or similar platforms.
- Develop and implement processes that improve efficiency, reporting accuracy, and internal controls.
- Lead accounting system enhancements and support technology initiatives.
Leadership & Team Development
- Manage, mentor, and develop Senior Property Accountants, Property Accountants, and Accounting Staff.
- Review team deliverables to ensure accuracy and adherence to policies and deadlines.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical accounting guidance and professional development opportunities for team members.
