Accounting Manager
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee all aspects of accounting operations with a focus on construction accounting and GAAP compliance. This role will manage the accounting team, ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain internal controls, and support ERP systems. The Accounting Manager will work closely with project and operations teams to deliver timely, reliable financial information that supports business decisions and project profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the accounting team; provide coaching, workflow organization, and performance management.
- Ensure accurate, timely month-end and year-end close processes in accordance with GAAP.
- Maintain and enforce accounting policies, internal controls, and best practices across construction projects and corporate functions.
- Manage construction-specific accounting tasks including job costing, revenue recognition, contract accounting, change order accounting, retention, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting.
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, variance analyses, and management reports for leadership and stakeholders.
- Coordinate and support external audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Partner with project managers and operations to monitor project budgets, forecast margins, and resolve accounting-related issues.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and general ledger maintenance.
- Lead or support ERP implementations, upgrades, and system optimizations to improve accounting workflows and reporting.
- Drive continuous process improvements, automation opportunities, and month-end efficiency initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; advanced degree or relevant certifications a plus.
- Solid technical knowledge of GAAP and proven experience applying GAAP in a construction environment.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Hands-on construction accounting experience: job costing, revenue recognition, WIP, retainage, and contract management.
- Strong analytical, financial reporting, and month-end close skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Experience with ERP systems (implementation or administration) and proficiency in accounting software and Excel.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
- CPA designation preferred but not required; candidates with equivalent experience may be considered.
- Previous experience as a manager or supervisor is a plus, demonstrating team leadership and people development skills.
