Job summary

Souffle Therapeutics seeks an Accounting Manager to build and scale the accounting function, overseeing close, reporting, and controls in a growing biotech environment.

You will partner with R&D and FP&A, manage external audits, and implement scalable processes for a future financing path. This onsite role in Watertown, MA requires CPA and strong GAAP expertise.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years of accounting experience with 1-2 years in a lead or early manager capacity.
• Public accounting experience and biotech, life sciences, or regulated R&D environment required.
• Demonstrated public company experience.
• Hands-on experience with month-end close, reconciliations, and financial statement prep.
• Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
• Experience with ERP/accounting systems (NetSuite ideal).
• Strong Excel skills and comfort with large data sets and schedules.
• Fluency with use of AI models/technology to support the finance operations.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and perform day-to-day accounting activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, accounts payable, POs, and GL maintenance.
• Lead and execute month-end and quarter-end close processes with scalable improvements.
• Review work by junior staff or external partners for quality control.
• Maintain fixed assets, leases, prepaid, and sub-ledger schedules per U.S. GAAP.
• Prepare accruals related to research, clinical, and operational activities.
• Partner with R&D, Clinical Ops, and FP&A to track project costs and ensure proper accounting treatment.
• Support accounting for research-related expenditures and intercompany spend.
• Prepare and analyze financial statements, management reports, and schedules.
• Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and policies.
• Provide reporting for internal stakeholders, investors, and the Board.
• Assist in developing SOX-ready policies and procedures.

SUMMARY

We are seeking a hands-on Accounting Manager to build and scale our growing accounting function as we look ahead in the next few years. This role will oversee core general accounting activities and be critical in establishing accounting processes for clinical operations, R&D accounting, ensuring GAAP compliance, and preparing the company for future growth, financing events, and audit readiness.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations & Close

• Oversee and perform day-to-day accounting activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, accounts payable, purchase orders, and general ledger maintenance. Play a key role in preparing the company for future financing events and public company readiness.
• Lead and execute month-end and quarter -end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting and continual improvement of close efficiency and scalability
• Review accounting work prepared by junior staff or external partners, providing guidance and quality control as needed.
• Maintain fixed asset, lease, prepaid, and other sub-ledger schedules in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
• Prepare and manage accruals related to research, clinical, and operational activities, including CROs, vendors, and interdepartmental expenses.
• Partner closely with R&D, Clinical Operations, and FP&A teams to track project costs and ensure proper accounting treatment of research activities.
• Support accounting for research-related expenditures, including vendor accruals and project-based spend.
• Prepare and analyze financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules.
• Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies.
• Deliver timely and accurate reporting for internal stakeholders, investors, and the Board
• Assist in developing, documenting, and maintaining SOX ready accounting policies and procedures designed to scale with a growing organization.

Audit, Systems & Process Improvement

• Support external audits and serve as a key liaison with auditors by preparing schedules and responding to inquiries.
• Assist with the optimization of ERP and finance systems (e.g., NetSuite) and related reporting tools.
• Continuously assess accounting processes and controls to identify opportunities for increased efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
• Provide day-to-day guidance and mentorship to junior accounting staff or contractors, as applicable.
• Act as a collaborative partner across finance and operational teams, contributing to a strong control environment and continuous improvement mindset.
• Responsibilities may evolve over time based on organizational priorities and growth stage.
