Job description

Work Schedule: Full-time with a flexible daily schedule

Employment Type: Permanent / Direct-Hire

Job Location Type: Onsite

The Accounting Manager will join an award-winning construction organization in the San Francisco Bay Area that has earned recognition for workplace culture and safety. This is an exciting next step for a hands-on construction accounting professional who enjoys improving processes, partnering with operations, and turning complex project data into meaningful financial insight. It may also be an excellent opportunity for an accomplished Senior Accountant who is ready to grow into people leadership and broader Building Accounting Management.

About the opportunity:

Working within a single-entity, high-volume construction environment, the Accounting Manager will help lead the day-to-day accounting operation while having the opportunity to significantly impact efficacy and efficiency. The organization is investing in better processes and technology, including Optical Character Recognition for invoice processing, giving this person an opportunity to help modernize workflows and expand automation across accounting and finance.

The Accounting Manager will report to and work closely with the Controller on month-end close, annual close, WIP reporting, Revenue Recognition, and management reporting. This person will provide leadership across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and labor compliance, and will find support from an AP/AR Manager, a tenured Payroll Manager, accounting specialists, labor compliance professionals, project managers, superintendents, and operational leaders.

The Accounting Manager will become part of a friendly, collaborative, and high-performing department where colleagues are encouraged to share knowledge and solve problems together. This is a chance to bring new ideas into an established construction accounting function, mentor developing employees, and create a faster, more scalable financial close without losing accuracy or control.

Outside of work, the Accounting Manager can enjoy everything the San Francisco Bay Area offers, including waterfront destinations, regional parks, professional sports, celebrated restaurants, live music, museums, and a vibrant mix of communities. The region also provides access to respected colleges and universities, innovative employers, and a diverse professional network. Whether someone prefers hiking, cycling, attending a game, exploring the arts, or spending a weekend near the coast or wine country, the area offers an engaging combination of career opportunities and quality of life.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead monthly and annual close activities, including journal entries, accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, supporting schedules, and financial review.
  • Partner with the Controller to improve the timeliness, consistency, and accuracy of the financial close.
  • Guide full-cycle accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, with a focus on accurate coding, timely processing, reconciliations, and strong internal controls.
  • Coordinate accounting oversight across payroll, internal labor compliance, and subcontractor labor compliance.
  • Own critical elements of Construction Accounting Manager deliverables, including WIP schedules, job cost reconciliations, overbilling and underbilling analysis, and Revenue Recognition support.
  • Connect project costs, billings, estimated completion information, and earned revenue to provide clearer visibility into project performance.
  • Review gross margin movement and communicate meaningful explanations and recommendations to management.
  • Partner with project managers, superintendents, and operations teams to improve cost tracking, financial transparency, and the quality of project-level reporting.
  • Reconcile job cost activity to the general ledger and investigate unusual transactions, coding questions, or project variances.
  • Prepare documentation and schedules for internal reviews, external audits, and other financial reporting needs.
  • Coordinate sales and use tax filings across multiple states and support tax matters connected to construction projects.
  • Maintain alignment with U.S. GAAP, construction accounting standards, Revenue Recognition requirements, and established company controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting systems, invoice workflows, reporting processes, and the responsible use of automation.
  • Help employees strengthen their technical accounting, systems, problem-solving, and communication capabilities through coaching and practical guidance.
  • Support staffing priorities, workload planning, cross-training, and service relationships across accounting and operations.
  • Contribute to budgeting, operational planning, special projects, and management decision‑making as the business evolves.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications:
  • Progressive experience in construction accounting, project-based accounting, or a similarly complex cost accounting environment.
  • Working knowledge of Project Accounting, Cost Accounting, WIP, job costing, overbillings, underbillings, gross margin analysis, and Revenue Recognition.
  • Experience leading or playing a significant part in month-end and year-end close.
  • Ability to connect the general ledger with project-level cost activity and explain financial results to accounting and operational stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Vista Viewpoint or a comparable construction accounting or enterprise resource planning system.
  • Understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, labor compliance, and subcontractor-related accounting workflows.
  • Knowledge of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, account reconciliations, and audit support.
  • Experience supporting sales and use tax filings or other multi-state construction tax requirements is valuable.
  • A dependable and proactive working style, including the ability to research technical questions and bring forward practical solutions.
  • Demonstrated career stability, sound judgment, and the ability to take ownership in a high-volume environment.
