Job summary

Children's Friend is seeking an Accounting Manager to lead daily accounting operations, supervise the Finance team, and ensure accurate financial reporting for a mission-driven organization in Rhode Island.

You will oversee GAAP compliance, internal controls, and grant-funded accounting, coordinating audits and collaborating with HR and program teams. On-site presence is required with hybrid flexibility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with 3-5 years in a supervisory role.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• Experience in nonprofit, government, or grant-funded environments.
• Proven ability to lead and develop accounting staff.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily accounting operations, including general ledger activity, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close.
• Hire, supervise, coach, and develop the Finance team (up to 10).
• Prepare and review financial statements, reports, and supporting documentation.
• Review balance sheet reconciliations, investigate variances, and resolve issues.
• Maintain internal controls, accounting procedures, and audit-ready records.
• Monitor compliance with grants, contracts, donor restrictions, and funding requirements.
• Coordinate annual audits and external reviews.
• Partner with HR, program, and operations teams to support accurate financial reporting and coding.
• Identify process improvements that increase consistency, accuracy and efficiency.
• Help create a team environment grounded in accountability, professionalism, and development.

What You'll Do:

The Accounting Manager role is critical to maintaining the financial discipline, operational consistency, and stewardship that support Children's Friend's mission and long-term sustainability. The right candidate will possess strong accounting experience, judgment, steady leadership, and a commitment to accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement.

What You Bring:

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with 3-5 years being in a supervisory role
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
• Experience in nonprofit, government, or grant-funded environments
• Proven ability to lead and develop accounting staff

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA or CMA designation
• Experience with federal grants and Uniform Guidance
• Experience using nonprofit accounting software such as NetSuite, MIP, Financial Edge, Sage, or Intacct

Work Environment

On-site presence will be required.This is a hybrid position requiring both remote and onsite work. Flexibility to work extended hours during peak periods, including audits, budgeting cycles, year-end close, and program reviews, is expected.
