Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 4–6+ years of accounting experience, including nonprofit exposure.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge with ASC 958 experience.
  • Experience with month-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Grant and fund accounting background is a plus.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups).
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable in a fast-paced setting.
  • Collaborative mindset with an interest in improving processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day accounting operations and support the integrity of financial reporting.
  • Oversee month-end close, journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Maintain general ledger and ensure GAAP-compliant activity.
  • Prepare financial statements, supporting schedules, and variance analyses for leadership.
  • Oversee grant and fund accounting, including restricted/unrestricted funding and ASC 958 considerations.
  • Track restricted funds and ensure donor-restricted releases align with requirements.
  • Support audits and assist with Form 990 preparation and external reporting.
  • Manage one junior accountant.

We're partnering with a mission-driven organization in NYC looking to add an Accounting Manager to their team. This is a high-impact role for someone who enjoys owning the close process, working with fund accounting, and being part of a collaborative, purpose-driven environment. This position will manage one junior accountant.

What you'll be doing:

This position will be heavily involved in the day-to-day accounting operations, supporting the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting while playing a key role in revenue and fund accounting.

  • Lead key components of the month-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure all activity is recorded in accordance with GAAP
  • Perform bank and balance sheet reconciliations and investigate variances
  • Prepare financial statements, supporting schedules, and variance analyses for leadership review
  • Oversee contribution and revenue recognition, including both restricted and unrestricted funding
  • Apply nonprofit accounting guidance (including ASC 958) to ensure proper treatment of grants, donations, and earned revenue
  • Track restricted funds and manage the release of restrictions in alignment with donor requirements
  • Partner with internal teams to ensure accurate recording of contributions and program revenue
  • Support audit processes and assist with preparation for external reporting, including Form 990
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen controls and improve accounting workflows
  • Manage one junior accountant

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance
  • Public Accounting experience highly desirable
  • 4-6+ years of accounting experience, including exposure to nonprofit environments
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, with hands-on experience applying ASC 958
  • Experience with month-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Background in grant accounting and fund accounting is a strong plus
