The Accounting Manager will own the end-to-end accounting for Position Sports and serve as a trusted business partner to senior leadership. The role delivers the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement each month and records AR and AP activity in the ledger. It also supports budgeting and forecasting for Position’s agency and events businesses alongside the CFO and broader finance team. This is an exciting, newly created role at a fast-growing company.
This is a hands-on role for a CPA or experienced accountant who runs a clean close, keeps the ledger audit-ready, and explains the numbers clearly to non-finance leaders. The role is the primary day-to-day owner of transactions into the accounting ledger and reconciliations within it.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting and financial reporting
- Own the monthly P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statement, delivered to the CFO on a defined close calendar.
- Manage general ledger activity, journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations. Own the close checklist and reconciliation calendar, and elevate open items.
- Maintain balance sheet integrity, including deferred revenue, prepaid event costs, accrued liabilities, and clearing accounts, with reconciliations saved to the work papers.
- Prepare variance analysis and commentary for the CFO and Position senior leadership.
- Respond to reporting requests from the broader accounting and finance team.
Revenue and event accounting
- Apply US GAAP revenue recognition (ASC 606) to event fees, sponsorship, ticket, and agency or representation revenue, including gross versus net presentation of pass-through and reimbursable costs.
- Ensure revenue and expenses are recorded in the correct period and assigned to the correct event, project, or department.
- Work with senior leadership to manage budgets and provide P&Ls for events and agency deals. Review results monthly, confirm all billing is recorded, agree final invoice amounts with operations, and close out budgets at settlement.
Cash, payables, receivables, and expenses
- Complete accounts payable and accounts receivable and update aging reports. Prepare ACH and wire payments for CFO approval, review collections with senior leadership, and reconcile receipts, deposits, and bank accounts.
- Create invoices for fees owed to the company, and ensure they are recorded in the ledger and reflected in the aging reports.
- Review and approve employee expense reports, reconcile corporate cards and business accounts, and ensure every charge is coded to the correct event.
- Provide cash activity and open payables and receivables information to support the cash forecast.
- Direct and review the work of a part-time accountant, who supports day-to-day processing.
Budgeting and forecasting support
- Provide actuals, commitments, and event-level detail to support the annual budget and rolling forecasts prepared with the CFO and finance team.
- Track results against budget by event and department and flag emerging variances.
Systems, controls, and audit support
- Lead the accounting side of the transition from legacy QuickBooks books to Microsoft Dynamics, including chart of accounts mapping, opening balances, and reconciliation of converted data.
- Maintain organized support for transactions, reconciliations, and event settlements. Provide ledger detail, reconciliations, and schedules to the finance team and external auditors on request.
- Maintain approval documentation and submit bank reconciliations, journal entries, and vendor changes for review by the CFO’s team.
- Identify and document improvements to close, expense, and payment workflows.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. CPA preferred.
- Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of month-end close and preparation of full financial statements including cash flow.
- Strong working knowledge of US GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition.
- Hands-on experience in a mid-market ERP or general ledger platform with multi-entity or project tracking. Microsoft Dynamics is the company’s accounting ledger, and Dynamics or similar ledger experience is preferred. Experience limited to QuickBooks or similar small business software does not meet this requirement.
- Event, sports, media, entertainment, or agency accounting experience preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills, including reconciliations and variance analysis. Expensify or Concur experience is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage competing deadlines with limited day-to-day oversight.
- Clear communicator who works effectively across Eastern and Pacific time zones.
