Job summary

Connor Painting, an Indianapolis-based commercial and industrial painting contractor, seeks an experienced Accounting Manager to own the finance function and build scalable financial systems. The role blends hands-on accounting with strategic finance leadership, partnering with ownership and a Leadership Committee.

You will drive automation efforts, improve visibility, and implement technology across QuickBooks, Procore, and other platforms while guiding reporting, controls, and compliance.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in construction accounting and financial management.
• Strong understanding of AP/AR, general ledger, reconciliations, payroll reporting, and financial statements.
• Experience with construction job costing and project-based financial tracking.

Responsibilities

Accounting Manager | Connor Painting | Indianapolis, IN

Connor Painting is looking for an experienced Accounting Manager who can do more than manage the numbers. We’re looking for an innovative accounting leader who can take ownership of our accounting and finance function and help build the financial infrastructure for our next stage of growth.

As a growing commercial and industrial specialty contractor, we are continuing to evolve our systems, technology, and processes. We need someone who understands construction accounting and job costing, but who also brings curiosity, new ideas, systems thinking, and a continuous improvement mindset.

This is a hands on role with significant ownership. Our Accounting Manager will oversee the company’s accounting and finance function while also serving as a strategic partner to ownership and a member of our Leadership Committee. This person will have visibility across the business and an opportunity to help shape the systems, reporting, and financial insights that support our decisions.

Responsibilities

Financial Oversight & Accounting Operations

• Own the day to day accounting and finance function, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll support, general ledger management, reconciliations, and financial reporting
• Manage monthly, quarterly, and year end close processes and monitor cash flow, working capital, and overall financial performance
• Coordinate financial reporting across multiple related business entities and prepare quarterly and year end financial and tax documentation for external CPA partners
• Coordinate with external CPAs on company taxes and provide financial information needed to support ownership related tax reporting and planning

Job Costing & Profitability Analysis

• Oversee job costing accuracy and analyze project profitability, labor performance, margins, and financial trends
• Partner with operations and leadership on forecasting, cost tracking, project performance, and financial decision making
• Ensure accurate project financial data across QuickBooks, Procore, HubSpot, and other operational systems

Billing, Revenue & Payroll Support

• Oversee invoicing, receivables, revenue recognition, and complex construction billing, including AIA and percentage of completion billing
• Review payroll reporting and labor allocation to ensure accurate job costing
• Communicate with customers, vendors, project managers, and leadership regarding billing, collections, documentation, and payment status

Systems, Reporting & Innovation

• Own and continuously develop financial systems, reporting structures, and accounting workflows
• Improve financial visibility and workflows across accounting, operations, estimating, and project management
• Develop dashboards and KPI reporting and help implement and integrate company systems
• Proactively explore opportunities to leverage automation, AI, emerging technology, and system integrations to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability

Compliance & Risk Management

• Ensure compliance with applicable financial regulations, tax requirements, internal controls, and records retention requirements
• Support audits, insurance reporting, certified payroll, lien waivers, tax exempt documentation, COIs, and other customer or vendor compliance requirements
• Assist with insurance administration, claims documentation, and related compliance needs

Requirements

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Proven experience in construction accounting and financial management, including job costing and project based financial tracking
• Strong understanding of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, payroll reporting, and financial statements
• Strong proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft 365; experience with Procore and procurement or supplier management platforms such as Ariba, Coupa, ISNetworld, or JAGGAER is highly valued
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to interpret financial data and provide meaningful insights to leadership
• Innovative and systems focused mindset with the ability to identify opportunities for greater efficiency, visibility, and scalability
• Strong technology aptitude and a willingness to explore and leverage automation, AI, software integrations, and emerging tools within the accounting function
• Ability to quickly learn and adapt to evolving software platforms, systems, and business processes
• High attention to detail with the ability to independently manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and ongoing financial responsibilities
• Strong communication skills with the confidence to work directly with ownership, leadership, customers, vendors, project managers, and internal teams
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive company and ownership financial information
• Collaborative and solutions focused approach with the ability to build trust across accounting, operations, project management, and leadership
• Comfortable working in a growing organization where systems and processes will continue to evolve

Education/Experience

Required Experience

• 5+ years of progressive accounting or financial management experience
• Professional experience with construction accounting, job costing, and project based financial reporting
• Experience managing a broad range of accounting responsibilities and financial reporting

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
• Experience in commercial construction, industrial services, or specialty contracting
• Previous experience with significant ownership of an accounting or finance function
• Experience supporting ownership and operational leaders with financial reporting and decision making
• Experience improving financial systems, workflows, reporting, automation, or technology utilization
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Indiana Notary Public certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire
• CPA or other relevant professional certification is a plus, but not required
